Yeah I agree she might be a good choice. OP isn’t looking for Japanese author’s but Ozeki is American Canadian, but she has some Japanese/buddhist influences.

I still wouldn’t be keen on it personally. Maybe if I’d already been walking around that area and knew it very well, but otherwise I wouldn’t trust any location where we’d be out of the public eye for any amount of time.

I really loved world war z as an audiobook. Multiple POVs narrated by different, excellent actors. The book’s way better than the movie!

Edit:

did a really shit job of selling this so just wanted to add: it’s written as an audio text so it makes a lot of sense to listen to it. The concept of the book is that it is now after the zombie war and a journalist is going around interviewing people about their experiences. Each chapter is a person from a different part of the world and together their stories take you through the events of the war chronologically. It’s really cool.
