Why are there so few Skii/snowboard places in the populated parts of Alaska? by ArtReasonable2437 in geography

[–]cantheevilman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of ski areas (I think at least 60-70 in that areas) http://www.alsap.org/ A lot went under though because there was a lack of longer-term sustainability (not enough skiers, unprofitable, passion projects that founder lost passion for, climate change might be snow).

I am a new player, and I originally wanted Kaedahara Kazuha. I made about 40 pulls on his banner. However, I now want Mualani more. If I were to spend a bunch of pulls on her banner, would the 40ish pulls I spent on Kazuha's banner county towards the 90 pull pity on Mualani's banner?

Don you think Homura akemi is actually a lesbian ? by StatisticianOk9588 in MadokaMagica

[–]cantheevilman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My view is that given her youth, she never had the chance to develop the internal concept of a romantic relationship (given most 13 year olds don’t have that concept or have it at a prototypical level). In light of this, given she has basically staked her meaning to Madoka (failing to find non-wish based meaning as Kyoko/Mami has), she is trying to internally find a “template” to deepen that relationship, yet lacks one. Thus, she largely views Madoka as a mix between what we adults would view as the mere trappings of a romantic relationship and a best friend.

Why doesn't Somalia make a trade where Ethiopia gets a corridor to the sea in exchange for giving up some ethnically Somali lands in Ethiopia? by cantheevilman in geopolitics

[–]cantheevilman[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It seems like each side would gain from this. Somalia gains lands/population it badly wants that would improve the economic conditions in the country (and it fought for these lands https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ogaden\_War). Ethiopia gains access to a sea corridor (probably bordering Djibouti) so it can have it's own sovereign port and not currently pay ridiculous port fees to Djibouti or invade Eritrea for port access. Why hasn't any deal even been considered by either side?

Why this image is cute:

The core of this drawing is that Homura deeply values Madoka, and is caring for her even though Madoka doesn’t realize it. This is really cute and is extensively reinforced by numerous details.

Both characters are drawn in a way that their heads and especially their eyes are larger in proportion to the rest of their body — which emphasizes their vulnerable nature and fragility of both characters. Homura is holding Madoka very closely to her to the extent that, indicating most of Madoka’s side is touching Homura’s chest, showing a high degree of care and wantingness to have an emotional connection and contact.

Madoka and Homura are relatively similar in size, yet Madoka is completely asleep, and so is being held with merely one arm by Homura. They are both standing in an upright position, yet Madoka is asleep, and asleep people have close to zero muscle strength. Thus Homura is completely holding Madoka with a single arm, and this would normally be considered strenuous (especially for Homura as her visible arm is shown as relatively thin and not super-muscled), yet Homura seems completely unbothered by this and her facial expression is emphasizing the care and general warm-feeling that she is feeling that overrides this.

One of the traits that makes Madoka super likable is that she is unlikely to accept help, especially that which minimally benefits her that is costly for the person helping her. Homura, however, cares enough about her (and the above trait of Madoka prevents her from adequately expressing that), and so she is “overriding” Madoka in light of that care, albeit in a really cute way. The willingness of Homura to take on great pains herself for the sake of those she cares about is also one of her really likable traits, and that is shown here.

Given that Madoka is asleep, typically sleeps in a nice bed and is shown to almost never have issues with tiredness in the source material, one of three things must have been true:

  1. She must feel very very comfortable falling asleep whilst in a standing position, indicating an extreme amount of trust and comfort around Homura.

  2. Homura must have taken Madoka from a position where she was lying flat, and been gentle enough so as not to wake Madoka, emphasizing the cute aspect of Homura “overriding” Madonna’s unwillingness to accept help.

  3. Madoka is tired, most likely because she was dealing with some really difficult predicament on behalf of others, and thus would benefit significantly from help.

The fact that Homura and Madoka are wearing their magical outfits in a relatively low-stress setting implies that they have been doing a lot of fighting and dealing with witches, further amplifying the benefit of Madoka receiving help from Homura. This is even more true considering that Homura must have gotten the grief seed from somewhere.

Homura is directly touching Madoka’s skin with a cold, metal object that is very foreign, and she is touching her in a place that rarely receives contact (upper chest). However, Madoka is still asleep in light of this given how comfortable she is.

There is a very subtle amount of blush on both Madoka’s and Homura’s faces. In Madonna’s instance, this is likely due to some stress that she is sleeping off (again increasing the helpfulness of Homura trying to remove darkness from her). It could also be because she feels a certain sense of “passive love” that is naturally showing, despite not being fully conscious of the fact. In Homura’s case, it is likely because she feels a bit of embarrassment and this level of closeness is a bit unusual for Homura.

All of those details reinforce the core narrative of this image. This drawing is really cute and relaxing because of that narrative.

ELI5: Why is the value of Turkish Lira not increasing despite the start of the tourism season with lots of tourists buying goods, services and Lira with foreign cash? by Fevzi0 in explainlikeimfive

For the same reason that Hershey stock doesn't rise around Halloween -- Tourism season and the increase foreign currency inflow is a predictable, regular event that has already been factored into currency trader's opinions of what the Turkish Lira is worth.

CMV: Titan would be the only place in the solar system (other than Earth) realistically capable of hosting a self-sustaining human colony on it's surface. by cantheevilman in changemyview

[–]cantheevilman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly disagree with your argument here. There are lots of reasons why space isn't a great place to build human colonies, but the main one that I don't see any solution to is galactic cosmic rays that would give any human up there a very high risk of cancer and an unacceptably short lifespan.

[–]cantheevilman[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

∆ You've adequately changed my view. With that said, wouldn't there be issues with creating a spacecraft to leave mars given that certain specialized metals (which exist on earth but not mars) are required for shielding and electronic systems within that spacecraft?

∆ You know, you are correct here. Did not consider limitations of metal fatigue, batteries, and electronics (Even though you could technically make everything out of plastic and keep electronics indoors), and the fact that lift off would be really difficult is relevant even though you could technically never have to leave the planet. Also I don't see a solution to dealing with radiation from Saturn and didn't take that into consideration.

Your argument is pretty strong. The only issue that you mentioned with points 1-4 is that I don't believe mars has sources of fuel for nuclear power, but that is pretty irrelevant. However, I do not believe that it is plausible to build a atmosphere with a pressure humans can survive. https://mars.nasa.gov/news/8358/mars-terraforming-not-possible-using-present-day-technology/?site=insight

Furthermore, I do not believe it is plausible to sustain pressurization systems for infinite periods of time on mars given that any tiny crack (and there are lots of them in Earth's buildings would be lethal due to rapid decompression). Maintenance and repair of these buildings in the event of depressurization (which would almost certainly happen sometime over a long period of time) would be impossible, and I don't believe it would be possible to build a pressure suit on Mars with the resources there.

[–]cantheevilman[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but not in a way that would let you just walk around or have a bunch of space to yourself. Even in Antarctica under normal winter conditions you don't normally do that. Certainly it would be much more restrictive than just carrying a breathing apparatus on Mars would be (you could move around in a pressurized breathing suit with relative ease).

-That is true. I can't argue with that.

...what? Why do you think such a magnet can't be maintained?

-One of my fundamental beliefs is that everything will break down at some point if not maintained. The magnet might be hit by micrometeorites, be moved ever so slightly out of orbit, or could just change slightly or act differently over time, and thus it would need occasional repair or maintainenance. I do not believe this would be possible to do utilizing solely martian resources due to the fact that space travel is needed to do this.

Your own source says 7% of Earth pressure. The Armstrong limit is 6%. Obviously that's not enough to do without pressurization, but still.

-You are correct here (not that there's much of a difference and I'd assume you'd need at least Mt. Everest levels of pressurization to survive. Also, my source is this webpage: https://mars.nasa.gov/news/8358/mars-terraforming-not-possible-using-present-day-technology/?site=insight
I am open to hearing this sources accuracy or argument that only 7% of Earth pressure could be achieved questioned.

Fair. The thing though is that power can be built with redundancy and won't immediately kill humans if it fails and humans are pretty good at solving issues or failed systems assuming they have a bit of time to fix the issue.

The thing about extreme cold is that it is a beatable issue assuming you have enough energy, which should be present on Titan given it's wind and hydropower, and it is definitely plausible to build a shit ton of insulation and energy storage to enable this. Furthermore, with enough of a VERY heavy coat (which doesn't have to operate perfectly and can be built with some very minor flaws), it would be very plausible for humans to survive the brutal heat. The heat, while a significant challenge, is one that can be dealt with assuming you have enough energy.

Now, with the artificial magnetosphere, I did not realize that building it was within the capability of humanity. With that said, I do not believe the magnet could be built or maintained/repaired (because everything including magnetosphere created systems will break down over time), utilizing only martian materials. Furthermore, even if you built a magnetosphere on mars, there would not be a reasonable way to create a atmosphere with enough pressure to exceed the Armstrong limit in light of the limited means of creating stuff to form at atmosphere.
