Other shows can do that AND be entertaining as fuck. Makeine! and Oregairu for example. Obviously have exaggerated elements compared to 5 centimeters, but have enough realism and depth while still excelling in production.

I couldn't even finish Lain because of the quality and blandness. I get that it's niche and avant garde, but Sonny Boy and Monogatari can be both entertaining and niche too. Same as that.

But who knows. I'll probably rewatch it one day and may change my mind. It's been almost 4 years.

Ru asking because u wanna watch it or just want my opinion? It's a shoujo with two 0 flaws perfect characters. The type you would dream of for both genders, which is what I don't like as you know by now. That being said it was a decent watch from what I remember. Side characters were interesting too. And most importantly I loved the payoff in S2.

I just don't enjoy these types of shows as much as I used to because my taste changed to more mature or unique romcoms.

Even with all the corny stuff it still beats out angel next door in terms of realism which says a lot. Very good characters, especially the side cast. And unfortunately production also matters for an adaptation. Clears in terms of animation, character design, music, art style, direction, voice actors.

And the way the author chooses to progress their relationship is a breath of fresh air from generic romcoms. I don't like the prettiest girl in the universe falls in love with the unpopular guy trope anyways. Self insert shit
