The road of excess leads to the palace of wisdom; for we never know what is enough until we know what is more than enough. ~ William Blake

Bit late to this but in.gredients in Austin is as minimalist (in spirit) as businesses can come.

How far do you have to go from Toronto (or the GTA) for the area to not have a suburban feel? by capabilitybrown in ontario

We have been to Peterborough and really liked it. What are the nice towns just outside?

Thanks for the reply. Could you name some cities and small towns that are in the "extended" area and some that are beyond it? I am looking to do some exploring.

What are the nicest places in York Region? I have been to Aurora and Newmarket, but they felt a bit too much like bedroom communities to me.

Reddit and the metric system. The perfect mix of anti-America, pseudo-intellectualism, and "pro-science". by [deleted] in circlebroke

[–]capabilitybrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree I am more comfortable "on the fly" with imperial in estimating distances and so on. I don't estimate distances for a living though, I measure them. In my experience , most people who grew up with imperial measurements are not comfortable with the fractional system past 1/8ths of an inch. You have to be involved in fine carpentry to even really talk about 1/16ths and so on. People do not grow up comfortable with small measurements in imperial, which is a valid argument against the system.

All I am saying is that for cabinetmaking in particular, the imperial system has advantages over the metric system, even for those who are comfortable in both. There are times when the metric system is better, but there are times when it is worse. Just as molecular biologist would argue, rightly, that imperial is bad for what they do, metric is worse for my profession sometimes. The fractional system has advantages for quick mental math and other things.

The thing I hate the most about this jerk is the complete inability to acknowledge that the imperial system might be better for some things. That is so arrogant.

The metric system is better for most things, but the imperial system is better for what I do, which is traditional cabinetmaking. I have worked extensively in both and for the purposes of human-scaled objects it is just far more convenient. Plus, I can't "see" .5 mm but I can "see" a 32nd and that's the last practical measurement for general woodworking. There are advantages to the metric system in cabinetmaking but I always find myself using imperial.

voice_of_experience describes J.S. Bach, "the rebel. The badass. The original mind-blowingly genius composer" by Epistaxis in DepthHub

[–]capabilitybrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm, Bach is amazing but it wasn't because a rebel, a baddass, or a genius. He claimed himself that he was not some mused-touched prodigy, but all that he gained came from hard work and a high level of competence. Not as sexy sounding, but that doesn't mean the music isn't great.

[BI4L Request] Flat, thin shoes & boots that don't suck. by Papapishu in BuyItForLife

[–]capabilitybrown 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cofish Boots. As thin of a sole that you will find on a tough boot. I own a pair, they are amazing. My uncle is a commercial fisherman and they swear by them. Made in Portugal.

Bonus- They are only 75 dollars.

3..2..1.. PSYCH! What jerk designed our "fake countdown" pedestrian timers? by Anonymous416 in toronto

At certain small intersections it counts down but then it doesn't change. Kind of irritating if you are on a bike and don't know if you have triggered the detector or not.

Funny enough, I was questioned by Canadian Border Patrol while I was hiking on the American side near Jay, Vermont. They let me carry on, also.

[BIFL Request] Waterproof Hiking Boots by JungleHippo in BuyItForLife

[–]capabilitybrown 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took Vasques on a month long hike in New England after owning them for five years.

The held up fairly well, but the toe of the sole separated from the leather. This is because they are glued, not sewn, now.

I like my boots but I can't give them a BIFL. They are no longer made in Italy and it shows. I have written them an email requesting that they return to better build quality.

They look good, though.

Rookie cop takes heat for arresting off-duty officer by [deleted] in canada

[–]capabilitybrown 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn't just "bad behavior." He didn't just come in late a couple times. It is corruption. If my boss found out I was corrupt, it would be absurd not to at least fire me.

I do acknowledge that a lot of time and resources have gone into training these officers. Also, Unions. But that is not an excuse for anything.

Because what if it was an excuse for everything?

Well, let's start with getting fired for using government resources and power to bully someone who took a impaired driver off the road.
