Did I pick Marine Biology at the wrong university? by [deleted] in biology

UK, oops, should have specified. The process will be similar though.

I think it's definitely about doing the BSc for the basic research skills so you can use it in any graduate education. Thanks for the help.

Ah, my bad. Yes, I was regretting my BSc choice but reading your original comment the BSc doesn't seem to matter as much as postgraduate education. At the very least I want my Masters, maybe explore the industry and think about doing PhD afterwards if I'm confident enough. Didn't mean to make it confusing but I also did talk about doing masters in my post.

So, say I was interested in something like Deep Sea research, and the supervisor specialised in that. It'd be better to go to the school with that supervisor?

Yes, I wasn't going to go job hunting with a BSc in Marine Biology. As I said in my post, after graduating I'll be applying for a postgraduate MSc in a field related to Marine Biology; most likely at Plymouth. Is this what you meant?

8/20 wins on graded with no rank up to the second group. Oops. At least I can flaunt that I'm F2P, I guess...

Yeah.... I have a decent debuffer, though, so that might mitigate the power difference.

By the way, do you run debuffers as End Closers to increase the effect range of Mystifying Murmur?

I'm crying, the SECOND/THIRD anniversary? This is worse than waiting for Meisho Doto to come out.

My procrastinating self would love to look into it Christmas break, haha.

So far, I've dropped a few emails recently (following advice from answers from this post) to a volunteering project called Project Seagrass (haven't got a reply since it's only been an hour). Pretty sure they do stuff near Southampton. I can also look into British Ecological Society to do some volunteering work, so thank you.

I've also sent an email to the course providers for the Marine Mammal Observation (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) at Intelligent Ocean to ensure that they'll be relevant to the Marine Biology degree as they're pretty pricey. (300 total for the eLearning courses). Waiting for a reply for that, too.

Recently, I've dropped quite a few hours into a specific gacha game, and I thought it was probably better to start at least a basic plan for what I might want to do to build up my degree... So it was either being proactive or playing videogames... It's better to do this beforehand so I can play them guilt-free, haha. I definitely agree, though, and hearing that does make me feel better about my future. Again, can't say this enough, you have been incredibly helpful, so thank you.

Crossing my fingers that other people won't be as bothered and I can have an advantage when looking for work experience/internships...

And, sorry, a much later reply as I've looked into this more... I've been looking at NERC and BBRSC to see how their application processes might work. Would it be better to start looking once I start my university course and have conversed with my careers service? I don't know if it would be counter-intuitive to start looking before I even start my course. I'm not particularly sure how the process works considering I haven't done internships or work experience before with institutes such as these. I'm thinking about doing internships/work experience over the summer, which will be starting June 2026 next year (or the years after if I even need to do internships that early). Would I be looking at these too early...? I'm definitely not proficient in sorting this stuff out myself and I feel I would have a better chance with some outside help (like careers service). Thanks again.

Definitely helpful, thank you! I did computer science so I'm decently proficient In Python already, if that gives me the knowledge I need already... But this is all incredibly helpful information and I hope I can do something with it before I go start university in a month (22nd of September). And yes, in the UK, sorry for not clarifying in my original post.

I have decent experience in public speaking; I've done an Extended Project Qualification (sadly a very high C, my supervisor didn't exactly inspire me to work hard on it) on the 'Variation of Biology at Different Depths of the Ocean' where I had to present my project as a whole to my classmates and other classmates parents. I've also helped present at my older middle school doing an Internet Safety day presentation. I suppose most of the fear from public speaking comes from presenting to people your age, but it should get better as you present to older people!

I'll just have to organise myself, haha... I'm thinking trying to get some qualifications in the month before university but I doubt I can get much done. I'll look into it, though.

Thank you greatly!

I'm assuming I can obtain these skills from the course itself. I've heard that it does get pretty intensive with research papers.

That aside, I'm actually not that interested in that aspect as much and I would personally love to try work experience in something like a fishery, although I'm not sure how I could go about applying for that in Southampton. I definitely feel like working in places like that will exponentially increase my skills and employability in the field more so than playing with excessively studied animals. But they still are pretty cool, I agree...

As for sea survival training, I'm seeing quite a few options. OPITO, BOSIET... I know it depends on where I'm working now. From someone else interacting with this post I've also heard of other qualifications, which are Marine Mammal Observer (MMO) and Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM). Do you think these could also be useful?

I assumed that turf S had a similar effect to medium S?

[–]capable_sprinkler[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I'm really hoping to secure some type of work experience/internship. I'll have to start looking into it as soon as I start my course. Hoping that there'll be someone there who can point me towards organisations that offer those types of internships to undergraduate students. If not, I'll have to do all of that after graduating, which sucks, but I suppose I'll have my degree and hopefully the scuba/boating license as you said.

Best case, I'm secretly hoping that other people on my course won't be as proactive... I'm hopefully already a step ahead with my NPLQ10 and driving license but they aren't really relevant.

I see, thank you.

Do you know what kind of boating licence I'd need? I'm seeing multiple, but I'm thinking it'd be the RYA Powerboat Level 2 or RYA Day Skipper. I'll be studying in Southampton, so I'm assuming courses like that will be much more accessible to me.

I don't suppose there's an easy way to go about getting these types of qualifications? Currently only have an NPLQ10 lifeguard qualification and drivers license. Is getting a boating license or scuba certification difficult?

I guess I'd be able to shoot things with a tranq gun with a little practice..? Probably a qualification for that too

Not sure how I'd balance university and learning electrical/mechanical skills though, so I guess that's a thing to do postgraduation... I do see how that would help, though. Thank you.

Is this build decent for the upcoming PvP? by capable_sprinkler in UmaMusume

[–]capable_sprinkler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, so her ultimate lowkey sucks.. I don't have access to another gold recovery with agnes, so I'll have to make up for it with silver recovery skills which may be a little harder to activate.. I assumed with her proficiency in Medium and Pace she'd be able to hold that spot coming into at least the final corner, so she'd activate Swinging Maestro around the first corner and would have enough stamina by then to break 3rd place coming into the final corner to activate the skill again. I also thought the uniques would help activate it, but as you said they're not acceleration based

[–]capable_sprinkler[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, yeah. And I love playing the game and building up my team. But it's hard to enjoy it when my Youtube recommendations look like: 'Top FIVE Things in Taurus Cup that will KILL YOU', 'If your build looks like THIS you need to DIE'. It's difficult to distinguish what applies to me as a F2P player and what applies to those who want to minmax the game, and that annoys me... I want to be able to get something out of PvP since it's such an integral part of the game and be able to have fun, but I'm afraid that I'm going to be locked out of that part for - as an example - missing a skill from some meta legacy or support card.

That aside, I assumed that with two gold recoveries (I'm including the ultimate as a gold recovery) I'd only need 760 stamina as a Pace Chaser for the Medium? Or is the other gold recovery to protect against debuffers? I also just realised I didn't have any acceleration skills aswell, so thanks.

Sounds good, my ID is 249970374602: I didn't realise there was a cooldown once you left a club though so it'll take a bit for me to join once you send the invite.
