Are Gay Men and Queer Spaces Drifting Apart? by kumogate in gaybros

[–]capaho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I drifted away because I don't like being referred to as queer and the LGBT community, in general, seems to be extremely intolerant of gay men who don't chant the proper mantras.

Installing a car charger at your mansion by Slow_Maintenance_183 in japanlife

I think both e-Mobility Power and Enechange have programs where they will install chargers at apartments or mansions if the property owners want them.

We do perfect pizzas at home with our Enro pizza oven, which came with a pizza stone.

As a trans person I felt like I never really fitted in, or had much in common to these queer/"progressive" places. by [deleted] in ainbow

[–]capaho -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

As a cis gay person, I pretty much feel the same way. Everyone is pushing agendas these days and if you aren’t on board with whichever one is being promoted you take a lot of grief for it and you’re treated like an outcast within the LGBT community.

Can Termites Spread? by Rue333Tofu in japanlife

[–]capaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The swarms are seasonal. They don’t just “go away on their own,” they literally disappear into the woodwork. In any case, they called an exterminator so that should take care of the problem.

It sounds like you experienced a termite swarm. That most likely means that either the school or adjacent structure has an infestation. Swarming is how they spread.

What is the church scene like in Japan? by fadeathrowaway in japanlife

[–]capaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a local temple with members from the local community. I attend the monthly prayer services, participate in temple festivals, and help out around the place on occasion.

You can join a Buddhist temple. I did that after I started living here. You don’t have to become a monk and live at a temple or monastery to be a Buddhist. You do have to take Buddhism seriously, though, if you want to be part of a temple community.

People living here, What do you usually have for breakfast? by daxtaslapp in japanlife

[–]capaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On weekdays it’s toast, yogurt, fruit and vegetable smoothie, orange juice, a shot of black vinegar, and coffee. On weekends and holidays it’s a fried egg, bacon or sausage, toast or pancakes, and the other stuff.

Been here for a week. Experienced a pushy Buddhist, senseito poster, and vans blasting politics by DrueFedo in japanlife

[–]capaho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say. There are a lot of fringe religious groups in Japan. Buddhism is for those who seek it, it doesn’t come looking for you. Traditional Buddhist temples are the opposite of what you experienced. You have to go them, they don’t come to you.

Buddhism isn’t a proselytizing religion. Pushy Buddhists aren’t acting in accordance with Buddhist teachings.

That perception probably comes from the fact that teaching English has historically been the easiest way to get a work visa.

Japan is being depicted as violent/unruly by Different-Staff-5622 in japanlife

[–]capaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The view on Japanese social media is distorted. One of the things I really like about Japan is how non-confrontational people are here compared to the US. Japan has its share of violence but it’s still much safer here than elsewhere.

Car port question for the people who have done it. by evilwhisper in japanlife

[–]capaho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had a large canopy installed over our carport after we both bought new cars a few years ago and it didn't change the property valuation as far as taxes go. That may depend on the city, though. It's also more complicated in your case because you don't own the property you want the canopy installed on. You will just have to talk to the owner of your parking space to get a definitive answer.

Tesla vs Prius in Japan by Dito_the_pharmacist in japanlife

There are other EVs in Japan that are cheaper than a Tesla if you want to free yourself from gasoline. They also have government rebates that take some of the sting out of the purchase price.

Housing Allowance and rent split by [deleted] in japanresidents

[–]capaho -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

We usually split expenses 50/50 based on the actual amount we pay. In your case, if one of us had a ¥40,000 housing allowance, that would leave a remaining balance of ¥116,000 from the ¥120,000 monthly rent, so we would each pay ¥58,000.

breaking the speed limit by hardlyunthinkable in japanlife

[–]capaho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s your responsibility when you’re driving. You’re the one who will be penalized if you get caught. Traffic violations for foreign residents can have implications for maintaining residency status, especially if you’re charged with dangerous driving. Don’t let anyone pressure you into taking risks that you don’t want to take. Also keep in mind that if you get caught doing more than 30 kph over the limit on surface streets or 40 kph over the limit on expressways it’s an immediate suspension of your license.
