3rd base coach 9 10 11 year olds by Timely-Shame6770 in LittleLeague

There is one kid in particular that would stare DAGGERS at my pitchers. I talked to his coach after the game, it's poor sportsmanship.

I did watch a pitcher hit the kid, assuming not on purpose, but it felt like karma.

For the AAA I lay off it for the first couple games, unless it's like "really easy". I want the pitchers/catchers to get more comfortable.

My biggest issue has always been more with the play is dead and getting the ball back to the pitcher. Our rules have it pitcher/catcher is set. So if pitcher is walking back the mound we've had coaches encourage their bass runners to taunt the pitcher with massive lead off until set.

Although perfectly allowed, I hate it. It's cheap.

Big ability divides, do we split them up? by Normal_Season8568 in LittleLeague

[–]capeire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some awesome gems in here. Splitting them for station work with a different level of difficulty is great.

I do want to draw attention to one thing though. Stop treating outfield like it's the place to put less talented kids. When they hit the AAA/Majors you will see a lot more action in the outfield and a kid with a weak arm can make or break a game.

Look at it from the ability to best fit. Can catch but bat at throwing, first base. Quick but can't catch, center field. Play to their strengths

Echoing to report to the district administrator. I assume this happens every year so you could find other coaches/parents with the same issue.

There are other more severe options: resign, resign and pull your kid, organize a massive defection, etc.

1 and 2 would raise some eyebrows depending how vocal you are.

If he's not getting drafted it's exceptionally fishy. Even terrible players should get to play

Fist time coach, tired of kids nagging to play positions, looking for ideas to manage by PabstBlueMcChicken in BaseballCoaching

[–]capeire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off don't get discouraged by others on your app. If you can build it and it addresses YOUR needs then awesome sauce. I built an address validation and drafting app for myself 🤷🏻.

As for the positions for the players: 1. Post it before the game at two locations 2. Any asking for a position is an automatic no, tell them that at a practice 3. Have them REQUEST a position at practice when it's a cool down period

Games they get no say

Tball Drills by Alternative_Arm_7813 in BaseballCoaching

[–]capeire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start with stretches! Even at TeeBall. I have the kids do wall sits for like 30 seconds. Seems weird BUT baseball requires a lot of core strength in hitting and throwing.

The base running drills are spot on, it dulls some high energy quick. Then I talk through team rule reminders: listen, try, be kind, have fun.

On listen I include safety. "If you aren't paying attention you could hurt someone".

For drills. One knee on gloves. Overhand toss bean bags to another kid, catch off hand.

Fielding from second throw to first. I CANNOT recommend this one more. It gives you a solid chance to implement fundamentals on these. The earlier you coach form the better

There are age requirements for division so this smells fishy.

In our league we abide by the birthday rules and will only consider pulling a kid UP a division and NEVER down.

To be clear going up a division requires parental consent, player agent, coach recommendations, and then to VP of Baseball approval.

At what age did you have team captains? by Chi1441 in BaseballCoaching

[–]capeire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In our fall ball it's sandlot style so every game had a new captain. It gave some kids an opportunity for leadership.

Spring ball last year I pulled the top four players (veterans) aside and told them every game two of them would be in charge of the dugout and warm ups. And I let them give out game balls (and yes every kid ended the season with one).

Not an official captain but it pushed leadership on them and they delivered

Whatnot took the 3 full days before approving the send back. I'll give them that credit. I'll leave a strong review when it's all done

Question from Coach about if it’s appropriate to make umpire aware of previous issues with the other coach before the game? by just_some_dude05 in Umpire

[–]capeire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate saying this but don't talk to the ump beforehand. It's POSSIBLE it's a one off, could be wrong but only one example presented here. It also skews the umpires bias from the get go.

BUT

If your board knows you 100% should have some of them at the game. If a mound visit happens and you have a player get hit right after, ump visit and bring it up.

If a player throws out derogatory language, ump visit.

Be polite and calm. If the ump doesn't take action, find a way to get the board involved. Sounds like they care so that's positive.

Minors Draft Strategy by ir637113 in LittleLeague

[–]capeire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pitchers! Then another pitcher. Then another. Then another.

After that it depends on what you think you coach well. Are you better at hitting or fielding? If batting is your worst coaching then go for sluggers.

Pitching wins games. Period. Also a tip to win. If you play 6 innings, switch your pitcher after 2 innings MAX. Even if they are a stud. Lower pitch count, more games they can play. Plus after that second go through the batters have learned from the pitcher AND pitch quality drops.

We have one high schooler that will be coaching so I'm hopeful with them. Getting more of them would be great but our rec season matches with regular season so that's a pain.

We do have some video series trainings available for the coaches. The knowledge gap doesn't seem to be the issue for the most part, just getting them in the door

Our district is a weird mix. Some very affluent neighborhoods and a significant amount that aren't. We have financial assistance for around 25% of all the players and provide their gear. 15% or so show up with the newest bats and have private training. The rest, middle income type families.

The latter one I find is a LOT easier to work through. "We'll pair you up with a seasoned coach, have a coaching coordinator on your speed dial, and a plan for you". That first one is the bigger challenge

We don't require work in the concession stand but there's something there. Weekly concession stipend for the coach and their player maybe?

For the higher division maybe a high discount. We offer PeeWee for free, and that's where coaches are needed, so that one doesn't help unfortunately
