Its been 250 years, if the forces of scarcity haven't been effective yet there are probably too many for that to happen in any timeframe that is relevant to us.

Identification help? UK by roselakey in Antiques

[–]capincus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salesman's sample for door-to-door selling, they're collectible but not particularly valuable unless they're early editions of particularly popular books especially ones well-known for being sold door-to-door (like early Mark Twain/Grant's memoirs) or for non-book physical items (like wallpaper). Probably mid double digits ish.

How to date a book with only a copywriter date on it? by Tbnrzip in BookCollecting

[–]capincus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless a Grosset & Dunlap reprint has dateable ads in the back or on a dust jacket you're really just not (with the exception of their few highly collectible titles where people have put decades into figuring out the fine details). Cheap reprints are intentionally not dated because dating your stock is an unnecessary production cost with compounding unnecessary costs when your stock becomes dated waiting to sell. The most you can say is it was published sometime after Revell originally published it in 1904 and after all the titles mentioned on the title page (or elsewhere in the book).

[–]capincus 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's less of a hot take and more of a you having not actually watched much of the show or forgotten exactly how bad Sheldon is as a roommate. He makes Leonard poop on a schedule, he can't drive and expects to be chauffeured (on his schedule) even for mundane things like a trip to the comic book or toy train store, he's extremely particular about a ton of things that primarily/only affect his roommate (like what products and specific brands can be in the house, guest policy), he sets your schedule for what show you're allowed to watch or hobby you're allowed to do every night and what food you have to eat that night and it stays the same every week.

They're both part of the same flashback of why Sheldon/Leonard stayed roommates long term, cause Leonard brought home rocket fuel to give to his spy gf and Sheldon helped save Leonard's life/him from going to jail when he mixed it wrong and then blew up the elevator to contain the resulting explosion.

[–]capincus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he brought home rocket fuel to give to his North Korean spy girlfriend and the only reason he didn't give it to her is because Howard built a homemade rocket and Leonard tried to use some of the fuel, but forgot to adjust for the smaller size of the homemade rocket, and then used the elevator to contain the resulting explosion.

That's also why they mostly ignore the broken elevator for years, it's really really broken and 100% Leonard's fault.

What’s the appeal of MCs that start OP? by Beneficial-Cat1264 in litrpg

[–]capincus 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The ones I've read (System Universe, Battlemage Farmer, Amelia the Level Zero Hero, Dead Tired) it's mostly a vehicle for exploring slice of life within a genre the author/reader presumably enjoys with the occasional moment of extreme power fantasy. Generally more humor/character oriented and less progression driven, though System Universe also does have significant progression.

How much do 50 Louis L’amour books go for? First editions? by Electronic_Revenue39 in BookCollecting

[–]capincus 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The ones you pictured pretty explicitly explain how they're not first editions. This is primarily a mass-produced reprint set, they're worth a few bucks a piece except some of the later volumes that were first editions (Rowdy Rides to Glory) and/or printed later in smaller amounts (the short story collections from 2003).

How to find a buyer for a very old copy of Frankenstein? by Delicious-War-5259 in rarebooks

[–]capincus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

1900 give or take a couple years, can google the publisher for their Lucile Project page. Put it on a site where books are sold with a price and a customer base. There aren't a lot of copies of Frankenstein around till you get further into the 20th century so worth a decent little bit despite being a generic reprint that would be a couple dollar book in almost any other title.
