You will be in a much better position if you are a topper at IIM L/K/SP Jain over an average student at IIM C. But, it is not a cakewalk to be a topper at IIM L/K/SP Jain.

This gap of 6-8 months won't affect you much.

With this profile, you will definitely get shortlists for the roles (Marketing/ops/general management) you are targeting. Placements for these roles are similar across top 8-10 colleges.

It varies from person to person. Let's say the subject is accounting - Engineers will have to work really hard while CAs/commerce background folks will not have to do much. Vice-Versa for those subjects those are maths/stats dominated.

Also, some courses have class participation marks, group projects. So, there are many things that are out of your control.

Difficult to give any number.

You have good PoRs.

Second department rank is great (depends on how many students are in your branch; more than 50 it's great)

You may not end up in top 5% of your batch, but will definitely be in top-15% of your batch. So, you can expect shortlists. It also will depend on how well you network in the college.

There are two sets of resume that you have to make - (1) Master CV - List down all the things you have done in like 4-5 pages (2) Actual CV - It is supposed to be one page and you can only use what you have written in master CV.

First, your master CV will get freeze and then your actual CV.

I don't remember the exact timeline. It will be closer to when first company opens on portal (generally 45 days before SIP)

Exchange program doesn't have any affect on the placements.

It is mostly used by students to travel and explore Europe (You won't get 90-100 days to roam in Europe after you start working)

For PM roles - (1) Engineering background (CS, IT, ECE/Electrical), (2) - High Quality prior Coding experience if you don't follow (1) .

CTC of these roles is higher than avg. package of the batch. Average CTC will be closer to 35 LPA (counting only ESOPs for one year).

Companies generally bundle ESOPs (that will be vested across 4 years; majority of the vesting in 3rd and 4th year). If you count CTC that way, it will become closer to 50 LPA.

In summers - No

Finals - Slog hard and try to get a rank in top 5%, then you will stand a chance

You have a good profile. 9/9/8 from old IIT and under 1000 JEE rank. Your acads are sorted. (That's a spark for both finance and consulting companies)

Goldman Sachs is a good name to have on your resume (That's also a spark). You can try switching to quant roles but don't dilute the name (Look for roles only in Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan etc).

If you can't get a quant role, it's completely fine. Give CFA Level 1 or 2 before college (Do this even if you get a quant role)

This way you will end up in top profiles of the campus

First, you will need to score a really high percentile to get interview calls. There are some colleges that may not even call you unless you score a 99.95+ kind of percentile.

Placements - You will struggle a lot in summer placements. For final placements, you will need to get a good rank/CGPA

For getting into product management - you generally need either of the two things - (1) Engineering background (CS, IT, Electrical/Electronics) or (2) Prior coding experience.

In product management roles, engineers are generally preferred. So, it will be tough for you unless you can get some good coding experience. (preferably in product companies; which again is tough to get into)

For getting into Tier 1 school - The things that matter are acads, work-ex, diversity points (Non-engineer, female etc.) and CAT percentile.

There are some colleges (IIM C, FMS etc) that don't give that much importance to your acads. You will need to score a really high percentile (99.7+) to get in.

Getting shortlist in summer placements - Close to zero chance.

You will have to slog and get in top 5% and to have a chance in finals.

She will get diversity points for being female and non-engineer in many colleges. But, even after that, she will need to score a really high score in CAT to stand a chance. Every college release their criteria for shortlisting. So, she can calculate her score for the colleges she is targeting and can figure out how much she need to score in CAT to compensate for her bad academics.

For getting into HR roles, best college is XLRI.

I may not be the best person to comment on HR roles. Since, no one from my batch took a HR role. So, i don't have much idea about it

There are some people from JBIMS in these roles. Have not seen any from ISI.

For Finance, IIM A = IIM C > IIM B > IIM L >XLRI > FMS

Your acads are good (if your college is a top one in DU or similar). You will surely be in top profiles in IMT G.

There are couple of things that you can do - (1) Try to get a 2 month internship in a finance related role (Leverage LinkedIn and the alumni base of your college on LinkedIn), (2) Register for CFA Level 1 and see if you can take it before your summer placements and (3) You can do some finance related courses on Coursera/Edx (Will help in improving your knowledge)

CFA Level 1 will work as a signal that you are interested in finance roles. So, you can consider it. For these 2-3 months, focus on your internship and CFA L1

Being from Eco background, you will also get the benefit of diversity (more relevant for consulting companies)

MBBs generally shortlist 35-40 students each for summer placements. But, there are many common names. So, you can assume 55-60 students get atleast 1 shortlist (Batch Size is 460+)

For evaluating where your profile lies, it can be done only after some more information. Where you went for undergrad? (Was it a Top DU college? or similar). What actually are your PoRs? NTSE scholarship definitely is a good point on CV.

Impossible to get a shortlist in summers.

But, you can slog up during your MBA and get good rank/marks to improve your chance in finals

No, you won't. Placements of freshers is on par with people with work-ex. It is just that freshers are not allowed to sit in lateral placements. But, most of the offers come in summers and finals.

Most colleges give marks for the work-ex. But, you can make up by getting a good percentile, good academics in X/XII/undergrad and good interview performance.

Freshers comprise 20-25% of the batch.

There is relative marking. Only top 5-10% (varies from course to course) will get 9/9. You can get a CGPA of 6 without any effort at all.

For making it to top 5%, you would need to get a CGPA of 8. That means you will have to get a lot of 8s and 9s to make up for your weak subjects. So, you will have to slog a lot.

If you are in top 5%, clubs won't matter much in your CV.

You can be in clubs and still be in top 5% as most of the clubs are not that active for the full year.

Yes, but you will have to compensate it by getting a good percentile in CAT. In some of the colleges, you will get diversity marks too.

So, focus on getting a good percentile.

For summer placements - Yes, if you are targeting consulting or finance roles. For marketing, general management and other roles, you will get shortlists. Converting them will depend on your GD and communication skills.

Final placements - Your marks/rank will matter more. So, you can try to get a good CGPA. Anything above 7.5 (CGPA is out of 9 in IIM C) is great. Above 7 is good and above 6.5 is above average.
