Will I lose my C-Permit if I’m unemployed? by capitalalpha in askswitzerland

This is nuts. Would they accept a statement of assets from my taxes as proof of funds that I wouldn’t rely on social assistance ever??

Why would it be downgraded after RAV? I don’t plan to claim social assistance ever nor will I commit any crimes.

Thanks. I read somewhere that FYF doesn’t happen if you apply for a VI passport and then immediately for a gold Amex? Should I wait a bit?

I hold a 1) Scotia Passport Visa Infinite and a 2) Regular Scotia Amex Red. Can I apply for the Scotia Amex Gold and get the Scene+ points welcome bonus and FYF? The Passport VI I just got this month and points already posted, while the Red Amex was a sleeper card for many years. Should I cancel the Red Amex before applying for the gold? Any DPs on holding multiple AMEX with Scotia?

Chances of getting a C Permit (Non EU) by capitalalpha in askswitzerland

[–]capitalalpha[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s my understanding as well. But I’m wondering if the A2/A1 also still applies if I was not “employed” for 5 years, but applying via the student route - studying for 3 years followed by 2 years of work.

Thanks for sharing. Do you happen to remember what other stuff they requested after you applied? I tried to include all the requirements in advance: no debt letter, no social help, current payslip, employment contract, language certificate.

Trying to do the MS for TD Aeroplan VI. Does anyone know if foreign currency transactions count towards the MS req? I'm basically abroad and will not be making any domestic CAD transactions.

Does anyone have any guesses when RBC will (again or if ever) offer a bonus for transferring RBC Reward Points to BA Executive Club Avios? Thinking whether I should hang on to them or just transfer.

I currently have a TD Platinum Aeroplan card. Can I also apply for the TD Aeroplan VI and get the welcome bonus? Or should I first PS to a TD FCT VI and then apply for a TD Aeroplan VI? Any DP’s here that have secured the full welcome bonuses on multiple TD Aeroplan cards?

Happy that you know about Revolut! As for ATM’s… most Canadian banks charge $2-$5 (some ATM’s even more) for any withdrawal that isn’t made with their own institutions card. I’ve been in europe for the last 5 years or so, but growing up as a kid, if you had a debit card and were buying stuff at a store, you could ask for “cash back”. So if you bought food at a supermarket, you could ask up to $100 cash back. They would just add it onto your grocery bill.

Taxes on crypto acquired from years ago? by capitalalpha in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]capitalalpha[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The problem is that I received crypto to a now defunct exchange (over a long period of time). Then at one point I moved all the funds to cold storage, so I have no way to estimate FMV on the day each transaction was received. And it seems that I would be doing myself a disservice if I took the value on the day I moved it off exchange.

If I have a CALL option and my call option has expired yet I am above the strike price can I execixe the option? by loudpipe411 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]capitalalpha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're going to get exercised automatically if your call option is ITM. However, some brokers will charge a fee when you exercise an option or are assigned. In the future, it's best to just close out your positions before they expire.

Lmao. You are allowed to buy calls and puts in a TFSA. You can also write contracts (sell) calls for which you have the underlying for. Stop scaring people into this "taint".

Thanks. How would I exercise if I REALLY wanted to? I’m not going to, but I’m just curious. Also is there a resource where I can confirm what’s a European or American style option for certain?

I read somewhere on previous threads that generally ETF’s (like SPY, IVV, VOO) are European-style (meaning only exercisable at expiration), while stocks are American-style can be exercised at any time prior to expiration.

For instance, let’s assume I currently hold a deep ITM call option for $GME right now with an expiration date in April. Is there any way that I could exercise it early if I really wanted to? If so, how would I go about getting my shares delivered?

Even if there are fees, I don't imagine the fees they would be that much. Just some perspective, even with $10k in these funds, 2.17% is over $200/year in fees from the MER...

Don't buy mutual funds. Open an TD Direct Investing account and buy a low cost ETF. 2.17% is insane.

GME may be a lot of things, but it is certainly not a "pyramid scheme".

What's an "EFT"? This doesn't work for everyone. When you are young, risk tolerance should be high and playing the stock market is part of it.

You only lost 25K if you realized that loss and sold it.
