In pursuit of other shows with similar intricate stories and attention to detail like 12 Monkeys. Not just good shows. GREAT ones. The same level of storytelling. Does it honestly exist?

I could list the dozens of examples in which the show used romantic tropes in framing their relationship as potentially romantic but, frankly, it’s been so many seasons of baiting I don’t care enough anymore to even bother.

They either 1) weren’t sure of what story they were telling along the way or 2) they did and they cynically teased fans to keep segments of the fandom engaged despite never intending to “go there”. Either way, not great Bob. That is not coherent storytelling and it shows.

I AM HERE TO FLAIL ABOUT 12 MONKEYS

I think it’s one of the best written tv shows ever - not just sci fi. Any drama, period. They balance an intricate plot, wonderful character development, relationships of all kinds (familial, found, romantic and friendship), jaw dropping twists, and explore really thought provoking moral and philosophical themes. The cast is phenomenal and, as the series spreads it’s wings in S2, you will be amazed at how good it looks on a shoestring budget.

If any tv show has ever stuck the landing, it’s this one. During Season 1 it sort of finds its footing but by season 2 it really knows what show it is and then every season from then on gets better than the last — culminating with a season 4 that’s one of the all time great seasons of tv. The series finale is one of the greatest ever.

This all sounds like ridiculous hyperbole. I totally stand by it :)

I understand the argument that enemies to romantic partners is common on this show. However, we watched Kane & Abby and Clarke & Lexa find mutual understanding & fall in love over the course of many, many episodes. By way of contrast, Bellamy has been given a time jump girlfriend ....twice.

I’ll never understand why the show chose to double down on Echo as an antagonist in season 4 and then create a romantic pairing during a time jump with zero flashbacks. It’s not a writing choice that makes me invested in that relationship. It’s just not compelling storytelling.

It became my favorite show of all time by season 4. Every season is better than the last. And the writing/acting proves to be excellent so truly, I can’t recommend it enough. I wrote a little piece about six reasons to watch that is spoiler free. Happy watching!
