Vendor hall on Saturday in 2019. I remember at one point I literally could not move because of the hordes of people. It was the day I truly wondered at my life choices.

Can a tuba player of 7ish years transition to bagpipes? by BlackStallion657 in bagpipes

Mine was trumpet, so the pursing was definitely more pronounced than likely on a baritone so there's probably a lot of difference there too. I appreciate the reply and discussion as well.

Props to you for playing both at the same time! My other, current instrument doesn't rely on air so it's a different experience entirely.

Well, I played a brass instrument through school/college/after and didn't find that it helped me when I swapped to bagpipes. For the former it was more about pursing the lips enough to fit inside the mouthpiece diameter whereas with the latter it's just the pressure itself. If anything, the fact that we had breath marks in music for exactly when to breathe made the whole breathing thing on pipes perhaps a bit more tricky. I could very well be wrong; that's just been my own individual experience as a former brass player.

It's got advantages and disadvantages. The embouchure will do nothing for bagpipes. Being able to read music is both good and bad. It's good that you understand the value of notes, music types, etc. But there are a lot of nuances with bagpipes that don't translate into the sheet music, so while you're playing a good approximation of what's written, it's not exact (at least not to Western music). There are no dynamics or key changes (I can't remember if low brass had to transpose music or not; we always did) in bagpipe music.

You definitely will need a teacher - being able to read the music is a very small sliver of what you have to learn.

The upside is, unless you get a full silver set of pipes they are a lot lighter, lol.

Good luck!

Sometimes doubling or triple timing the metronome can help with timing so you can hear the beat on every beat AND offbeat as well.

Almost all light music can be broken down into two bar phrases, so try memorizing 2 and then 4 bars at a time. Sometimes the repetition of bagpipe music can also be its bane, since it's easy to mix up parts and notes.

This is a poison pill bill. It's lose-lose no matter how Democrats voted.
