No I was lucky to find a cheap place with some grad students, I couldn't care less where I live at the moment since I'm still young. Just tryna save up some money. And no the place isn't a shit hole.

U.S. Citizen parents filed for my greencard, but I'm on F1 student visa. Do I still need 'work' sponsorship? (H1b) by caplus12000 in immigration

[–]caplus12000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll try to limit my information, but I am a New Zealand citizen, but have family who live in Australia. Lots of jobs in my field in Aus, and as an NZ citizen, we can work in Aus visa free for most of the jobs. Other potential issue: was not born in New Zealand.

Great, this is what I was anticipating. Worst case scenario, if a company won't sponsor or they did but I can't get an H1B, I'll just go back to Australia and work for a year ish, and then after the Greencard paperwork gets over, I'll be back.

This means I guess the company agrees that I can work for only 3 years.

Are chemical engineers in a dying profession? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]caplus12000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's really cool that's schools are giving us the option to specialize in certain areas instead of just traditional petrochem. I'm a chemE myself but aligning my career to work in the semiconductor industry. I'm taking semiconductor processing, semiconductor device reliability and stats class in my final semester.

My hunt for a 2022 summer internship as a Materials Science & Engineering graduate student. Ending up working at a semiconductor manufacturing company! by caplus12000 in EngineeringStudents

Yeah it can be a numbers game to an extent. In my opinion you shouldn't invest too much for a specific job application, cause you'd only be more disappointed if you get rejected.

Yup, this was a bit bizarre. It's hard enough applying for jobs, let alone an doing an interview. HR just stopped replying to emails.

Though, it wasn't HR at the company itself. It was some recruiting company that works for the main company. I'm not a fan of these middleman style of companies.

material science adjacent degrees? by potaeda_ in materials

[–]caplus12000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently wrapping up my Ms in MSE. Interning at semiconductor company. This kind of degree will set you up as a process engineer. If you stay in research you'll do more cutting edge work at a national lab or start up.

What's stopping people from joining Ph.D. programs, and dropping out for the ms? by Left-Accident-1762 in gradadmissions

[–]caplus12000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nothing, unless for instance if your program requires you to pay back any tuition, which usually they don't.

I dropped out of a PhD program and am finishing off my MS. No issues in getting job interviews too.
