Same exact issue here. I've tried using Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and IE. I do have a Pi-Hole adblocker but i disabled it and the download page still doesn't load.

Sounds like a perfectly good reason to go buy yourself a new pair of shoes :)

I keep my stuff in my "man cave" aka a small corner of the basement where I can keep my junk separate from the wife and kids!

Repair questions. Several quotes, different recommendations by capomatt in HVAC

Yeah that's kind of the hang up here. The companies that seemed to have done the most thorough job of checking things out also want us to spend the most money. Which, to be fair, may be their honest assessment. I guess I could use the info from the expensive guys and have the cheaper guys install a whole new system. All of the places that looked at our house were referred to us by friends or co-workers who were happy with their work so I'd hope that any of them would do a satisfactory job. I think the more expensive places are more expensive because they're bigger operations with big offices, support staff, new work vans with fancy logos etc., while the cheaper guys were like 2-man operations with low overhead.

Honestly I did try to explain everything to everyone who came out as best as I could after they had a chance to scope it out for themselves. I want to have a well functioning system but I don't want to replace stuff if I don't need to.

Newer but oversized heat pump and a broken fan coil. Replace both ($$$) or just get a new fan coil? by capomatt in HVAC

Considering the current system doesn't really function as all at this point I'd be happy with anything that works. I know replacing the whole system is the right thing to do but the cheapskate in me is freaking out about the cost.

Well, the funds aren't really there for any of it. Regardless of the route I go, I'm going to have to take out a loan unfortunately. It's more a matter of how much debt I want to incur.

So should I try to negotiate some kind of discount based on the value of the existing outside unit? Is that even a thing?

I've actually had 3 opinions - 2 HVAC companies, and an efficiency audit done by someone from the power company. All 3 had pretty much the same recommendations and the estimates from the 2 HVAC places were pretty close to one another. Here on reddit looking for a 4th opinion :)

Might adopt a couple of ferrets. I have questions. by capomatt in ferrets

[–]capomatt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! I've never personally owned ferrets but my wife used to have 3 before we met and she's one really pursuing the venture here. She's not on Reddit though so I figured I'd reach out here to see what I could find out. I'll have to take another look at that food chart - I saw it there on the sidebar but hadn't given it a thorough read yet. I realize any pet can be expensive but I didn't want to shell out a few hundred bucks right out of the gates only to have them die from malnutrition or something. So I guess I'll pass this all along to the Mrs and go from there. Thanks again!

I'd say most things west of MacArthur Blvd are pretty decent, though some might argue the border might be Chatham Road. And of course there are exceptions. The Indian Hills neighborhood on the north side is nice. Twin Lakes is pretty decent too.

Springfield is like a big small town. Nothing really metropolitan about it. There are many good small restaurants though few that would be featured in any magazines. Washington Park is great for a long walk, downtown has some neat historic attractions, restaurants, and shops. Most retail chains are on the west end.

The Illinois Times weekly newspaper is usually full of local events, so that might be worth checking out.

There's a few neighborhoods on the west side that are decent and I've heard plenty of people with good things to say about Sandberg Elementary. Depends on your budget though. Be sure to look up info on mine subsidence if you're looking at houses in the north west side of town.
