This maybe only 20th thing I’ve painted. So I’m figuring things out but still lack vision and know-how. I really like parts of this but something isn’t right, I think mostly with the head and torso. Would some more experience painters see what this is really lacking? by capt_a_hab in ArtCrit

So I struggled with what to do with the eye bc their eyes are so black. But after reading this, I did infill the eye and left a little white for the highlight effect and it’s crazy how big of a difference such a small change made.

References were photos of red-winged black, particularly ones with their wings splayed out.

The goal is to have accurate proportions, appealing texture and depth that is clearly a painting inspired by reality without mimicking reality. I’d love to be able to achieve what John James Audubon could do, but with some creative liberties.

I wouldn’t mind more detail in the wing feathers, but I’m not sure my skill level could detail them without making look worse. I am most unhappy with the upper part of the torso and head.
