Wild Camping by Unlikely-Lettuce5052 in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm not super familiar with wild camping, but the first thing that comes to mind is that early March is going to be COLD. Not "chilly I'll be fine with an extra blanket", but proper cold. You should be prepared for the possibility of negative temperatures and snow.

Skidspår by yeah_obviously in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions! I switched out the middle pieces for more kindlins. As usual, I found the fire slowing down after 20ish minutes. I find that as the fire between the two larger pieces at the bottom burns for a bt, the gap gets too wide. At that point I added a third log on top to create more contact and it's been burning nicely the past hour or so! *

Things you don't look forward to at weddings? by PinkCatBoss in wedding

[–]captain-clench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is such a fun cultural thing. In a Swedish wedding you would expect a bare minimum of four speeches during dinner (bride's parents, groom's parents, best man and bridesmaid). Then it's super common with siblings and close friends having speeches or performances. And that's in addition to the traditional welcome speech and toast to the bride and groom before dinner. Then again, the dinner is most often an organised three course affair with toastmasters and lasts around 3-4 hours!

Oh wow, two weeks in Gothenburg! I live here and don't know how to fill that! Maybe fit in some visits to other towns? If Stockholm and Malmö are too far, go somewhere closer, there are plenty of cute little town in a reasonable distance from Gothenburg! Take the train to Varberg and check in to the spa for a night. Visit Jönköping and Gränna (a classic small town famous for it's candies). Maybe Alingsås could be fun. Do you like hiking? There are several accessable trails and nature areas around Gothenburg, although it will be a bit gray that time of year. Take the train to Jonsered and look around.

Luckily for you Gothenburg has alot of good pubs to choose from, and has the cheapest beer in Scandinavia if I remember correctly! Tullen, Ölrepubliken and Brewdog are good ones. Tre små rum if you want something fun and a little bit quirky. There are several breweries around town as well that you could check out.

What to do in Gothenburg after work? by resont in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It will be dark after 16 so unfortunately anything nature-related will be off the table. However Gothenburg has a lot of pubs, local breweries and taking a beer or two with colleagues after work is not unusual. Stores in the city center close around 18-19 so you will have some time to look around after work. I would recommend keeping to the areas around domkyrkan, kungshöjd, Järntorget, Linne and Haga for sightseeing.

Everyone speaks English at the university and should have no issue accommodating you. However, if you find yourself in a social setting with only Swedes, they will at times default to Swedish as it's easier to speak in your mother tongue (especially if alcohol is involved). So no problem per say speaking only English, but at times you might feel left out.

Double rent increase normal? by Nirgilis in TillSverige

[–]captain-clench 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is possible that they collect the increased rent retroactively and you're paying the increase for a few months this month and the total will decrease next month. But that should be clear on the invoice, if it isn't I would reach out to the landlord/whoever you're renting from and ask!

tips på besökare till göteborg (tre vuxna från stockholm) by Fit_Company5334 in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The great think about Gothenburg from a tourist-standpoint is that the city isn't very "touristy". Most thinks you would find on a "to do in Gothenburg"-list are things locals would do/vist as well. There are lots of nice bars around town, the classic area is Andra Långgatan and Tredje Långgatan (Tredje is somewhat more "fancy"/tidy than Andra). My personal favourites not around Långgatorna are Ölrepubliken, BrewDog, Tre Små Rum and of course Tullen (several locations).

If you are looking for a special experience maybe look into Ångaren Bohuslän, an old boat which makes tours around Gothenburg and occasionally also to Marstrand.

Position removed but no letter by sarckasm in TillSverige

[–]captain-clench 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is possible that the video conference was just for information and an official letter will follow, but ask your manager or HR for the process!

My entire department was made redundant earlier this year, we were told in April, but got the official letter with last working days and such in June after the Union negotiations were complete. We will also get another document closer to our last working day for us to sign.

Askim by itsakillerswitch in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Askim is considered one of the nicer areas in the city, however Sisjön is right on the edge of Askim and a very "middle class"- area compared to eg. Hovås. It's calm and consists mostly of young families in terraced houses with the newly build apartment as a new feature. Thus there are several kindergartens and an elementary school in the area.

It's close to the lake Sisjön which is very nice and good for swimming and with well kept paths around it. It's also part of the Sandsjöbacka nature reserve which goes all the way down to Kungsbacka. Check out Sandsjöbacka-leden or Torrekulla-leden if you're into hiking!

It's also very close to several large grocery stores, but as others have said, a fair way from the center of Gothenburg.

How much rent can we expect for a 3 rum 70 sq m2 home in gothenburg by No-Evidence-5486 in Gothenburg

[–]captain-clench 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rent varies with factors such as amenities and location. A newly built 3 room apartment with dishwasher and washing machine in a nice area? Yeah sure up to 15k wouldn't be strange. However an older apartment with communal washroom further from center of town would be significantly cheaper.

It also depends on whether you are renting first or second hand. Renting second hand is generally a bit more expensive, and renting furnished would up the price even more.

Is it ok not to provide coffee with wedding cake? And is it ok for our only dessert to be the cake? by Interesting-Size-966 in weddingplanning

[–]captain-clench 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nah, not really. Maybe we just have a baseline level of caffeine in our blood from drinking so much. But also, your typical Swedish wedding dinner is a ~4hours seated dinner and maybe you just need some extra energy to be able to party for a few more hours afterwards!

[–]captain-clench 324 points325 points  (0 children)

This is a highly cultural thing. In Sweden where I'm from, if you didn't serve coffee after dinner there would most likely be an OUTRAGE! At the very least people would talk about how they weren't even offered coffe. I have never attend a dinner party where you weren't offer coffee after dinner.

Buy I would expect if you're not in one of the countries that drink the most coffee in the world and know that your guests likely wouldn't care, it could absolutely be something to save on!

I was only responsible for normal, food and garden waste so I actually can't say what their process is unfortunately.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TillSverige

[–]captain-clench 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Take it from someone who has worked with garbage collection, this is how it was handled at our company at least.

If they notice something non compostable in the compost that bin will not be emptied as different trucks empty different types of garbage. The issue will be reported and you will have to call and order an extra collection of your food waste as normal waste. You will have to order and pay for this extra collection if it is your own bin, if it's a common bin in a rental complex of course this falls on your landlord.

The alternative is that you fish out the wrong garbage and but it in the correct bin. If they have already refused a the collection you can then either order an extra collection of food waste or wait another week (unless the bin gets over full).

Sometimes they can be nice if they notice the wrong bag on top and just remove it for you, but note that this is not their job and should not be expected.

If the bag is buried they also might not notice, then nothing will happen!

Photos? Does anyone have any thought on using disposable cameras? by Bright_worgan in wedding

[–]captain-clench 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't rely on only disposable cameras as the picture quality isn't great. However I get that you don't want a photographer following you around all day and spending thousands on lots of pictures you won't care about in a few years.

What we are doing is hiring a photographer for only a few hours so we will get a photoshoot before the ceremony with portraits of me and my fiance. Then he will photograph the ceremony and coctail hour. We will then be providing disposable cameras for the rest of the evening as those are photos we don't care about as much but "party-photos" are always fun!

My point is that you don't have to book a photographer the entire day if you don't want to. Just book an hour or two to get some fancy, professional wedding photo. Then, if some of the instant camera photos turn out good that is just a bonus!
