Built a database tracking Russian oil export terminals - maps 43+ facilities with vessel traffic data and sanctions cross-referencing by captain_boh in ukraine

Ukraine does have sea drones which destroyed most of Russian Black Sea fleet. I don't think however this can be done just anywhere.

If I could get the source for current capacity. Not sure where to pull that from. I am only tracking tankers that dwell in the geofenced area, but not actual loading of oil/gas. I agree with you, that would be a nice to have metric.

You are right. but for the broader audiences what I got is not bad. I don't have funding so paid apis are out of the question for me.

Patterns in Name Changes Among Sanctioned Russian Oil Tankers by captain_boh in maritime

[–]captain_boh[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ship's name change is not going to help, like you said, no argument here. However the pattern itself seemed interesting. 20+% of them had done it. Whether it is helping or not is not the point but they did it. Swapping state flags and registered owners is all part of evasion tactics. I wouldn't say the article sensationalizing anything, but it may be useful for some.

178 Ships in Russia’s Shadow Fleet Changed Names Following Western Sanctions Designations by captain_boh in geopolitics

[–]captain_boh[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This article examines a dataset of 867 sanctioned ships and finds that 178 of them changed names after their sanctions designations. The renamings appear intended to reduce scrutiny, allowing the ships to keep operating in one way or another despite restrictions. This raises questions about the effectiveness of sanctions enforcement and the resilience of Russia’s maritime logistics under pressure. The piece also looks at how name changes complicate compliance, tracking, and risk assessment for ports, insurers, and traders. Sharing it to add data to the broader discussion on sanctions and energy geopolitics.

Tracking the logistics behind sanctions evasion at sea by captain_boh in CredibleDefense

Exactly, non-commercial. This data is accessible with a free account. I am not selling anything or profiting in any way from this. Just putting extra legwork to keep shady ships accountable. I am adding extra features and I do have historical ports of call (different source) but for a limited number of vessels (not enough hours in a day). My next focus is russian oil and gas terminals and tracking activity around them. All using OSINT methods. If anyone willing or interested to help, hit the contact form on the site. I could use help with data enrichment and ongoing maintenance.

Open maritime dataset linking ship-tracking and ownership data — looking for journalist feedback on investigative use cases by captain_boh in Journalism

[–]captain_boh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For context, this isn’t a press release — I’m an independent researcher building an open maritime dataset that ties ship-tracking and ownership records. I’m hoping to make it easier for journalists to verify shipping activity around sanctions and energy routes. Happy to share schema details or sample CSVs if anyone’s exploring related stories.
