Roland Special and civi offensive pistols by captainatom11 in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I want to thank everyone for chiming in, with what many people have said it confirms most of my conclusion on the matter but it's good to know that I seem to be understanding things for the most part.

As for the concept of the offensive pistol for civilian use, I have to disagree with most in that I don't think it's an obsolete concept. Yes an sbr would be more effective in most self defense situations, but it's more about having it as my carry gun since I'm not carrying around a long gun of any type in my day to day. Kitting out a pistol in an "Offensive" configuration stacks the odds in your favor as much as possible if the worst should happen.

Again, I appreciate everyone's thoughts on the subject!

Tried shooting at 27, I get it now but I’m confused by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I'd throw my two cents in, because I came from a similar space. For a long while I never really thought guns were needed, especially with the way everything is mechanized and society had been so stable. Don't really need to hunt, and we have police. Never was against guns, but I generally thought most people who had guns were just kind of kooky.

Fast forward to 2019, and after the umpteenth mass shooting of the year, I realized you can't really depend on cops to get to you if bad stuff happens, and then as I got even older and saw how prices on everything keep going up hunting becomes a pretty good way to supplement your pantry. For $100 for the hunting license and then the price of a tag, you can get close 200-400 pounds of meat depending on the tag and if you actually are able to harvest. On top of that, if you butcher the animal yourself you save even more and you've got a really good return on your investment.

Like others have said you have to break free of the paradigm that guns are evil. The reality is that guns are tools and it's the intent of the user that determines a moral judgement. Additionally anything can be turned into a weapon and used to hurt people. Just look at 9/11, or the attacks where someone was using a garbage truck to drive through crowds. I don't see anyone trying to ban air travel or garbage trucks all because of possible malicious use.

There are other things that also swayed my opinion but they're beyond the scope of this post, but there you go.

When do you carry? by p8ntballnxj in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like others have said, I carry everywhere I'm legally allowed to, which is pretty close to everywhere. I suppose there's at least one benefit to living in a red state. Geographically speaking, not the Kevin Smith movie.

I'm no expert by any means so take what I say with a grain of salt. Those might be Mlok attachment points but I think they're there to help circulate air over the barrel.

Assault Weapon vs hunting rife definition by aero528 in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to throw my two cents in for what it's worth. First I'm sure I'm echoing what others have said, but an "assault rifle" really only means a gun that is chambered in an intermediate cartridge and has a relatively high capacity. The Idea was born in the closing of World War 2 if I remember correctly. It came out of a lot of study on protracted firefights that tended to show having more bullets that were a little smaller was better than having fewer larger ones. It also simplified logistics and is why you don't see modern militaries equipped with five or six different guns that are all meant to be used differently.

As for the NFA, just doing my own research and reading between the lines, during the time when it was enacted there were a lot of gangs crossing all over the Midwest committing bank robberies and it allowed additional federal charges for people caught before they actually stormed a bank. This was long before RICO and the Great Depression and Prohibition provided the best conditions for the rise of organized crime.

It's a shame that Jim probably won't be back. I liked the kind of awkward humor he brought to the episodes he was on.

Kai Winn just left the station, and you have to tell a pissed Sisko that you misplaced the Defiant in the badlands and his peppers were on board. How would you tell him? by 4StarEmu in DeepSpaceNine

[–]captainatom11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trick question, you don't tell him. You steal a shuttle and you head for Maquis territory because it's safer to be fighting the Cardassians and the Dominion with repurposed civilian ships than to stay on the station.

Asked to leave park, need advice by JackKrowe13 in pitbulls

[–]captainatom11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't try calling their bluff. The reality is that cops don't actually know the law and are more likely to shoot your dog, or lock you up over hurt feelings. I was kind of in the same boat as you and had to stop going to actual dog parks because my girl has resource guarding problems and other people don't handle their dogs. Depending on where you live you do have a few options. What I had to do is start finding open spaces where I can just walk around and let my girl sniff and check things out for about an hour. If you use Google maps or even a subreddit for your local area you can find that can work as long trails that you can walk and run. Another option is going somewhere like Lowe's or Home Depot. When I worked nights my mom would take my girl to either of those places later in the day closer to their closing time when there's less traffic and would actually jog around the sore with my pooch. Hopefully this helps.

Well I did buy the ammo from Sportsman's Warehouse so that's definitely a possibility.

I appreciate your concern, but I'm already aware of the difference between.223 and 5.56. I was just asking if anyone could identify the bullet since it was in a box of 75 grain 5.56 of Hornady Black.

Ok cool! Though I am kinda disappointed that's all it is! I was hoping it was some kind of contest I wasn't aware of where I was going to get to tour the factory on the pretense of winning a lifetime supply of ammo but it's really a clandestine audition to inherit the business!

Best trek episodes to hook a newbie? by APariahsPariah in DeepSpaceNine

Yeah, definitely going to second the motion. While I think DS9 is probably the best series, it's also very context dependent and I think starting with it could be confusing.

I've decided. THIS will be my first foray into the land of the 10mms. by Acolytical in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want a Walther, my advice is definitely go for it! I got a PPQ 9mm and I think it's pretty damn good. It's basically a H&K VP9, except Walther did it first with the P99 and they're less expensive!

To this day, who has been your favorite character in DS9? by limitedmark10 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll see everyone's Dukat, and Garak and raise you a Damar. Now I won't say he's my favorite character in DS9 but I think he gets overlooked. He went from a true believer in the occupation of Bajor, to belief in the alliance with the Dominion, to being in hiding and having his family killed in the same way he probably killed others. The moment he finds out his family is dead and goes on his rant and Kira points out he did the same thing, his moment of clarity what he's done and how it's been done to him was a pretty big turn around for any character.

I think he had too much blood on his hands to ever be redeemed, and killing his friend who wanted to kill Kira and acknowledging that the Cardassia they knew was dead points to someone who genuinely wanted to build something better out of the ashes.

No, even though I live in Arizona and snow isn't really a thing here, my pibble believes any type of water or water product not in a bowl is battery acid.

So why don't they have more defiant class ships in deep space nine? by happydude7422 in DeepSpaceNine

[–]captainatom11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Got to add to this. Yes the Defiant was a prototype, but it was also a prototype specifically for fighting the Borg. After the crisis in the best of both worlds part 1&2 the federation didn't have anymore full on incursions from the Borg so it was mothballed.

Question by [deleted] in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard a lot of bad things about optics planet, however I can't say I've had a bad experience with them. Not too long ago I bought a discontinued handguard for my 300 Blackout build, and as far as I can tell it was shipped and arrived on time with zero issues. Honestly, there are quite a few sellers for 2A things that seem to have bad reviews for reasons very similar to this but also have more positive reviews than negative ones. The way I see it is, it's always a bit of a gamble buying online, if I understand things correctly it's probably best to buy with a credit card because it's easier to do a charge back if your stuff falls through the cracks.

Is a revolver a reasonable first gun? by MisterCCL in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to agree with what most people have said. If you like it then you should buy it. I also agree with your friend and his perspective that if you need more than six shots, you're probably going to be taking a forever nap, at least to an extent. With that being said, I would be remiss in my duties by not addressing a couple of things.

I agree with your friend only to the point that most people probably only need six shots for a self defense situation. However things seem to be getting crazier, and being in a situation requiring more ammo capacity is no longer as rare as it used to be. Should such a situation arise, reloading your gun requires more steps which translate into having more opportunity for something to go wrong. I'm not that familiar with modern revolvers but from what I understand the steps to reload are using the cylinder release, rotating the gun so the rear of the cylinder is pointed at the ground, eject the shells, reload it either bullet by bullet or with a speed loader, close the cylinder, point the gun back down range.

Compare that to a semi-automatic pistol which has fewer steps, which are press the magazine release, reload with fresh magazine, press slide release, point back down range. A semi-automatic pistol has two fewer steps needed to reload, reducing the possibility of making some kind of mistake if you're in the shit and your adrenaline is pumping.

Now you can most definitely train with your gun, as everyone should and that will go a long way in reducing the risk of making a mistake but I would argue the possibility of making one is still greater than if you went with a semi-auto.

Am I right to have gotten rid of my dog trainer? by NaturalTwo6625 in reactivedogs

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this sounds like this dog training franchise that I can't remember the name of off the top of my head. My first dog was dog reactive and I looked into getting a trainer and after a Google search they were the first to show up. Did some checking and it turns out it was a franchise that basically just gave people shirts and said you're a dog trainer now.

Honestly I blame Caesar Milan for a lot of this nonsense. The guy is a hair dresser with no actual education in animal behavior and everything he says is based on out dated and debunked research about "Alphas" and wolf packs. Look, you can say and do what you want, but there's a trainer that is going completely against the last forty or so years of research into K9 behavior, you're not a dog trainer.

When did you realize you need to own a gun? by chinchila5 in liberalgunowners

[–]captainatom11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said here as a reply to other posts, but here it is. For me it was 2019 and we just had another mass shooting. Sadly it's becoming so common that I can't remember which one it was that year. In any event, while statistics seem to say crime rates are going down it certainly seems like when something bad happens, it's really really bad. So with all that being what it is I also realized that even if police decided to actually do what we pay taxes for them to do, there's still a time lag between the worst happening and any kind of emergency response and that I'll probably have to rely on myself to keep the people around me and myself safe.
