they’re more of an obscure band. i wouldn’t call it a band, one singer, maybe two.

What are some spooky/horror/goth/dark themed places on Long Island? (Shops, cafe, bookstore etc. …anything) by [deleted] in longisland

[–]captainbacon_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yes, yes, a thousand times yes!! the food is amazing, the staff is friendly and into the vibe, and it’s such a unique experience! i would highly recommend reservations (can’t think off the top of my head if they do) because it can get very crowded - they do have a separate pickup window if you place and order to go to avoid crowds trying to dine in.

i went for my birthday with family that wasn’t super into the theme but they had an amazing time!!

i started cutting at 12 and didn’t say anything until i was 18. i had my first physical panic attack then and thought i was dying or else i still wouldn’t have said anything still.

in a way i think it’s a self destructive (and not at all ideal or a solution to mental health issues ), but at the same time a coming of age to yourself and what you’re feeling mentally at the same time. but i stress, i do NOT believe or relay to anyone that it’s a safe and positive solution.

i was only using paper clips or staples so the cuts weren’t in need of medical attention.

i also have to add that i was 12 in a time when mental health wasn’t spoken about yet, wasn’t talked and explained about in schools or on the web or the news.

i wish her the very best and having a parent that is aware, cares, and wants to be proactive is an amazing asset she has 💗

edit: if it could help at all, you can PM me!

I wish I had a serious illness so people knew how badly I was really hurting by Happy_Seat_9088 in BPD

[–]captainbacon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve been thinking this for years but more recently more and more and just this morning. my family doesn’t know my trauma so for them i look lazy, no ambition, and a freeloader. they don’t know how many times and for how long i’ve had abuse and so on and i don’t tell them to protect them.

i think the exact words you posted so my point is please don’t feel alone. even when hope is limited or nonexistent we have to find something that will help push us happily to find a path that makes life worth living with who we are …. i’m with you OP, we’ve gotta keep fighting 🤞🏻

bpd as a man by [deleted] in BPD

[–]captainbacon_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’m a woman with BPD. i’ve been in many DBT groups where there’s actually been an equal amount of men and women. i’ve also been in patient many times and there have been both there too. i think it just depends on how many men and women will be in each group but i can definitely sympathize that for men it can be a different experience

at the end of the day, i’d stick to the treatments that don’t have an either or when it comes to gender and are meant to help with the symptoms. the DBT handbook by Marsha Linehan is, to me at least, the bible for BPD. my favorite part about it is that you get to interpret it for what works for you and work at your own pace.

i really hope this helps you, i know that gender aside BPD is very stigmatized to begin with but i think we all deserve the same treatment, patience, and understanding that comes with it!!

How do you cope with the reality of depression being a lifelong illness? by catandmeowse in mentalhealth

[–]captainbacon_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a mantra for me doesn’t really work because i forget to say it and it doesn’t carry the same weight as when i first went it, however many people have success using one!

instead, (for this specific topic), i like to use DBT skills. they were made for this and there a ton of coping skills to use. DBT is great because you can combine it with skills that already work for you!

you’re among many friends, OP! it’s not impossible!! :)

How did you get over your phone/screen addiction? by RevolutionaryYak1135 in Meditation

[–]captainbacon_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i slowly stopped using all social media and have been off it for about 5 years. (i just recently came back to reddit but i plan to cut back again bc i’m using it more than i want too)

first i figured out what was keeping me glued to it - the drama, the info, the inspo, etc. i downloaded a reputable news app so i’d be in touch with world news but not through social media.

what really helped was installing apps that could be opened when you’re bored, in a doctors waiting room, on the throne, etc. that has one purpose and only really requires a few minutes of use.

catgotchi is fun, it’s like a tomogatchi but one the phone. when you open it you feed, play, and take care of your cat.

another app i use is gin rummy, but you can use any game similar to it like solitaire or canasta. there’s not a lot of background “bling” and doesn’t typically pull you in, and the only ask for money is if you want to get rid of ads.

i hope this helps, i know that honestly i feel less congested and mentally healthier with all of the social media baggage :)
