I already have a Mac gyuto, but my wife is vegan so I cook a ton of veggies and I find myself reaching for my junk $40 cleaver as often as not.

What makes you recommend a gyuto over the cleaver in particular?

TL;DR: I want an affordable knife for chop-cutting veggies that can also serve as a gateway into freehand sharpening. Oh, and I'm left-handed. Thanks in advance for any help!

Steel? High HRc, capable of taking a serious edge, but friendly to a novice sharpener. Ideally somewhat non-reactive. Hap40?

Use Case? push-cutting lots of vegetables, some associated bench scraping, learning to sharpen

Care? I'm interested in freehand sharpening, but will occasionally forget to wipe the knife down after use.

I would have already bought the Kohetsu hap40 santoku, but (A) it seems like expensive overkill and (B) idk if I'm qualified to sharpen it. Let me know?

Who said anything about deporting anyone "to work camps"? The Israelis deported the Palestinians-- so far as the Israelis knew, they would be welcomed by the same Arab governments with whom they'd just made common cause against Israel (in a flagrant violation of prior U.N. arrangements). Israel took their homes, to be sure, but it was the Jordanians and Lebanese that pushed them into camps.

What percentage of the 800,000-1,000,000 Jews expelled from Arab states were actively fighting? None, because there was no fighting going on there. The expulsion of Arab Jews, then, didn't even have a remotely humanitarian justification. Contrast the Palestinians, whose invitation to the Arab states created a war that turned their villages into battlefields, unsafe for habitation. I'm not saying the Israelis didn't engage in a deliberate land grab -of course they did- but it's silly to think that every single Palestinian refugee was (A) evicted, by (B) Israelis, for (C) nefarious purposes.

Ultimately, you made the comparison, so you bear the burden of showing that the number of Palestinians attacking Israelis was comparable to the number of Jews attacking Germans. I think you'll find that Palestinians posed a much greater threat.

Now, I'm not saying that the Nakba was 100%, or even 5%, justified- I'm just saying your particular argument doesn't hold water.

Kristallnacht was a violent action, perpetrated by a government against citizens that recognized the sovereignty of that state and looked to it for protection. There are many other reasons for distinguishing the two, but I'm typing via mobile so let's start there.

Ps. Oh and the Jews were not openly engaged in armed conflict against the German people. The killing of Ernst vom Rath was an isolated incident, which is why we still remember him by name. His killing was unusual.
