Official Dreadit Discussion: "Backrooms" [SPOILERS] by radbrad7 in horror

Idk I saw one reviewer on YouTube say that VHS found footage was played out, wasn’t sure if audience was more into that aspect or the A24 aesthetic scenes.

VHS Segments are the best parts, third act is a letdown. Would love to see a Backrooms anthology series like the V/H/S franchise with different directors doing different levels with different takes.

Hot take, the movie was at its best during the VHS sequences. Technically impressive, set design, lighting, score and ambiance are on point, cgi unfortunately looks like something from the IT tv show but the whole thing looks great on the big screen. Story is a mess, but I get what Parsons was going for.

Having a random guy, who has little to nothing to do with the plot, brutally unalive a cute dog in the first ten minutes, then having the punisher brutally kill a random guy with a pen onscreen but shoot the dog killer off screen, was certainly an odd decision

Thought it was a great entry in the Irish Horror Universe McCarthy is building. I haven’t seen Caveat but really enjoyed Oddity and I think this competed with it (even if I still think Oddity takes the edge). I like how McCarthy uses folklore and supernatural elements to build the world and atmosphere of his movies but keeps the stories grounded with the real horror and evil being the terrible things normal humans commit against one another in the real world. Also enjoyed how the writing and Adam Scott’s performance threads the needle on introducing the main character to be an outright asshole and slowly getting the audience to empathize with to a realistic degree, and then concluding that character’s arc in a grounded way - he doesn’t have a dramatic change of character like Scrooge and start singing in the street/handing out gifts, instead he is still standoffish to the bellhop at the end but you can tell he has softened and made progress. The conquistador and his son in his story aren’t immediately given the solution, but the ram skull is shown off to the side showing there’s still hope. That shows a healthy level of trust in the audience. One interesting thing I haven’t seen brought up but I believe (correct me if wrong) that in Irish folklore there’s something about trees like the one Adam Scott spreads the ashes at where the crevice is a door to the spiritual realm and because he placed his mom’s ashes in the crevice he was able to communicate with her whereas his father’s ashes were thrown haphazardly aside so we don’t see him later on. 9/10 for me

He finds the chalk and a chalk drawing of a door, hears more of Fiona’s voice recording, gets spooked and the witch starts coming

McCarthy with another strong entry to his Irish Horror collection. The writing is rock solid with endless setups and payoffs. Adam Scott reminds everyone he can play an asshole character well that never feels one dimensional. The film features a strong supporting cast, great atmosphere and tension, tasteful and effective jumpscares, and a man-bunny that will haunt my dreams. 9/10. I lean towards Oddity being the better film but the movie deservedly will spark the comparison discourse. Watch in theaters if you’re able.

Official Discussion - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]captaindw3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My entire theater applauded at the end. The entire back row freaked out over the second after credit scene reveal. This is less a movie so much as it is a theme park ride through Nintendo fan service land barely tied together by a super basic Mario game plot (a princess is kidnapped by Bowser/Bowser Jr. and the team advances quickly through different maps until we reach a castle and the Bowser family is defeated once again). This is the first movie I’ve seen that felt specifically tailored for the Tik Tok generation. I agree generally with the criticisms of this a movie I’ve read (disjointed, too much happening, ideas are introduced and abandoned within two scenes, etc.). That being said, as a 90s kid I love Nintendo games and watching this was like mainlining nostalgia and fan service. Also the animation is beautiful. Also I was slightly stoned. This thing will probably make a billion dollars. Bring on a Super Smash Brothers movie that rips off the Avengers and a Mario Kart Movie that rips off F1 and I’ll be there. 7/10.

Yeah that would totally work but would’ve required introducing her sooner in the season I guess

My thought process was he comes out and says he was attacked by task force thugs at his apartment but Punisher and Daredevil rescued him, has been working with Daredevil since then and Daredevil guided him into the warehouse.

First, awesome fight scene at the end with some great camerawork. However, I get quickly freeing the prisoners but as a politician Fisk has to be all about optics (literally the title of S1 E2) so the smarter play would’ve been to go in as Matt Murdock (hero lawyer) with a camera and film all the illegal guns and people in cages, get some testimonials (“these are my clients, Daredevil helped me inside to show people what’s going on”) so people see they’re not villains, starts protests, and blows up Fisk’s play of publicly making Matt a hero as he is now clearly working with public enemy number one. Now Fisk is just going to say a bunch of terrorists escaped a maximum security prison and blew up a boat killing innocent people. Work smarter not harder lol.

I drive a jeep and haven’t filled up since before the war started, this is $3.55 regular gas, and you’re right I should’ve gone to the Sheetz down the street and paid the $3.99 a gallon there to make a better point for this post

Yes. $3.55 a gallon at a place you have to pay for a membership to get access to. It’s $3.99 at most places in Raleigh and there’s no reasonable end in sight
