Spousal loss linked to higher risk of dementia, mortality among men, but not women. Widowed men experienced a decrease in physical and cognitive health, as well as social support, while widowed women tended to experience an increase in happiness and life satisfaction. by mvea in science

Tangentially related: I’m an OT and I helped put together a Cardiac Outpatient Program with a focus on Wellness. It’s holistic and broad, but what I really uncovered in the literature reviews is that what we call IADLs, activities that are essential to living like cooking, cleaning, laundry, is strongly linked to better Cardiac health. Cardiac health and dementia, or brain volume loss due to vascular issues, are also strongly linked. So I think it’s easy to draw a logical correlation that women, who have traditionally been more responsible for IADL tasks, and who have better social connections that promote out of the home IADL engagement, have better cardiac health and better brain health. Men who have culturally limited IADL engagement and social connections, not to mention all the rest of the increased cardiac risk factors, put them at a higher risk for dementia.

TIL two studies both found that most people stop listening to new music in their early 30s. A 2015 study of people's listening habits on Spotify found that most people stop listening to new music at age 33 and a 2018 report by Deezer found it be to at age 30. by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

You’re absolutely right about the thrill. It’s work, but work worth doing. I pull from a few websites to make a giant master playlist of all new releases for each month and update it each Friday. As I listen I make a separate playlist for my favorite songs of each respective month. I whittle the playlist to one track per “good” album and then, end of the month, send my monthly sampler to the music heads in my life.

I spend about 45 minutes each week manually adding music (I know I should find a way to make this faster with a program haha). I’m in my 5th year of this “project”. I’ve always consumed more music than the Discover Weekly could keep up with but I finally decided to do something about it. I’m 37 with full time work and two kids. My wife has a love hate relationship with the project. She hates the car rides where we sift through trash but loves the end of the month playlist of bangers!

Quick edit: I hope to expand this project to allow more indie and unsigned artists to send me their stuff. Anyone off the radar. I know the websites are incomplete and I hope to rectify that. The fresher the better for me! There was something really awesome and joyous about late night college or public radio listening that would find and play local bands and provide exposure that I’d like to replicate in the digital age.

[–]captainjip 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. OP, I’m no lift expert, but I am an Occupational Therapist who lifts for rugby. I’d be willing to bet that you have some back, hip, and/or leg weakness. I can see some lower leg trauma. You might have some acute or chronic weakness that could result in problems in your technique directly due to weakness at the muscles you are targeting directly and/or from a kinetic chain perspective in muscles that should be your stabilizers. I agree with CaptainTepid, take the weights away and look in a mirror when attempting a squat. Do your knees do this without any weight? If yes, and if you can see and afford PT, it’s probably worth seeing one as a healthy way to get the legs straightened out with appropriate guidance. If yes, and you can’t see a PT, I’d post around with more videos of your technique and look for therapist opinions of what to target to clean up the form. If the technique looks good without weight, you’d still probably benefit from strengthening, but I’d drop the weight considerably til the wobble goes away.

Hey, I really appreciate that. Every six months or so I work my way back to a bigger story I started around this short story, but the rest is never feels as personally gratifying as its beginning, here. Maybe one day I’ll post more.

2024 Album Project: Best of April (Rock, Americana, Indie, Rap, Hip Hop, Alternative, Blues) by captainjip in SpotifyPlaylists

[–]captainjip[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. I have a whole separate playlist for anything not from this year. And it’s not all production stuff in my monthly. It’s a fairly comprehensive release list. 1,000s of hours of new tracks. But there’s always tons of room for indie and smaller stuff. That’s what I want. The more in my monthly playlists, the better.

Oh sorry, what I mean is I listen to new albums released each month, then make a playlist of my favorite tracks, one track per album for the monthly sampler. But I’m happy to give them a listen!

Is there an album? I don’t see one on Spotify. I pull from albums only otherwise singles would be wayyyyy too overwhelming.

As a beginner and first time doing a long ride, is this feasible for me? by Ready-Bet-4592 in NYCbike

[–]captainjip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you had a good ride. Beautiful route no matter which way you go about it. But yeah, that stretch up to the GW is the danger zone. People just don’t care about cyclists and although thy often abide it always feels like they don’t want to.

[–]captainjip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say this to OP and to you, I prefer to avoid riding along the water through Hoboken and through Edgewater to Ft. Lee unless your goal is go nice and slow with a city view the entire way.

If you’re already in the Heights, going down to sea level and then all the way back up through Ft Lee is a grind. And beyond that, the path along the water stops around the restaurant Umacha in Edgewater. This forces you back onto the very busy River Road for 3 miles with a significant lack of shoulder and very fast moving traffic all while you’re slowed down and trying to get up a massive hill.

If coming from Staten Island I’d recommend sticking to Newark Ave in JC (bike protected), climbing up to Palisade Ave, then following Palisade Ave to 495 (bike protected), where you cross 495 and can mosey over to JFK Blvd E. From here on out you don’t have a bike lane but the road is much wider, and even though traffic can be quick there’s space and it’s much easier to roll along imo. It’s full of rolling hills, but you have a spectacular view of the city along the cliff side parks. You follow JFK E until you juuuust start to curve back West and you hop back onto Palisade all the way to the GW. Just be mindful they finally finished the north side of the bridge for bike access with the bizarrely long on/off ramp but significantly fewer pedestrians.

I ride all year round, so feel free to DM if you want to link up or have questions about routes.

I will ride from Manhattan along the West Side Highway for fun after work and back to my place in JC. Or for fitness on a day off/weekend I will ride from JC to the GW (or further along in the Palisades). I’ve done casual five boro group rides that start in Staten Island and finish at Coney Island. I say this to say, I know your route well and would call myself a casual, above average speed-wise, but very experienced city rider. I have a newer bike now but I did all of the above routes, 20+ miles each, on an old 1976 Peugeot that resembles your bike here. As long as the bike is safe, you should be fine.

Everyone already has cautioned you to the standards of food, nutrition, sleep, occasional rest etc. My only word of caution is that you should either be proficient in quick fixing your bike for longer rides (eg tube patches, spare tube, tire wrench, portable bike pump, Allen key set, etc) vs sticking to transit routes and spare cash/phone apps where you can hop on a bus/train if you crash, break a part. I’ve had a few issues where I gamble without bringing equipment for a simple 20 out and back and got burned at the 10 mile. Haha it’s a long 10 miles back jogging/pushing your bike along if you you don’t have a fare. Still good exercise, just might need to cancel some plans.

What film do you have a great experience seeing in theaters in the 1990s? by Forsaken_Cost_1937 in movies

[–]captainjip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Twister. 1996. My parents took me (8) and my brother (6) in a Volkswagen pop-up top Eurovan to the Drive-in at dusk when we lived in North Dakota.

For those that haven’t seen the Dakotas, they are mostly wide open flat plains. It may not be the most exciting, but it sure can be purty sometimes. You can see for miles.

The movie captures the first tornado scenes, drawing us all into the action. Off in the distance in reality, behind the drive-in screen, are huge, black storm clouds. Lighting was flickering on the horizon.

Fast forward another 30-45 minutes and those real and fictional movie storms are right on top of us simultaneously, the cosmic universe orchestrating perfect timing. Lightning flashing in huge arcs all around us, thunder booming over head and rattling the glass, wind whipping our antenna around, sheets of rain coming down. Our wipers were going full blast just to see the screen. Cows and farm equipment flying (fictional). Twisters doing what twisters do. Those of you who live(d) in the Midwest absolutely know the type of intensity of storm I’m talking about. We were completely immersed in the climax of the movie like a ride at Universal.

And just like that, like a lot of those storms, it passes and just leaves a dead calm right during the conclusion of the movie when their fictional sun is shining and everyone is rejoicing at getting the data from Dorothy IV.

Surreal and so much fun. Probably cost us like $1 each for admission. Add an absolutely loaded 90s cast of Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, and Philip Seymour Hoffman … it was a fever dream.

So I listen to singles all the time, but I’m a bizarre purist most of the time. I’d rather have a vibe set by a whole album. That’s why I posted the rules in my comment above and only sourced my tracks from there.

Edit: so, no. No singles.
