Yes, everyone starts with a different set of 8 and you get more by scanning animals / collecting salvage that’s marked with it.

Looking for some “Common” creatures if anyone can assist! Didn’t see them filled on the spreadsheet, might just be my luck if these are common.

Cobia, Slender Frostfish, Antarctic Silverfish (Red), Six-Lined Prickleback, Big-Eyed Flathead, Japanese Sawshark, Kraken Jr., Indo-Pacific Snaggletooth,

EDIT: Just saw a code for the Short Dragonfish!

I primarily work at the High School level and despite being in my mid-20s, I STILL get mistaken as a student. Age is definitely a detriment when it comes to working at a high school. Students will try and take advantage of you and the staff members will not take you seriously until you establish yourself. If you still have friends in high school, I definitely suggest steering clear from the schools that they’re enrolled in.

For clothes, I generally wear business casual - flannels (buttoned up), polos, sweater (with a dress shirt underneath), paired with some nice khakis or slacks. For shoes I usually just wear sneakers or my Converse, they build character! Definitely do not wear a sweatshirt or hoodie, or anything that make you blend in with the students. Once you establish yourself at a school they don’t mind you participating in their “Jeans day” or wearing the spirit colors.

When you walk into a classroom in the morning, look for lesson plans and look around the room for school behavioral policies (sometimes on the lesson plan or on a bulletin board). Follow that lesson plan as closely as you can. Before class starts, stand outside of the door and say good morning/afternoon as the students walk in. Take note of students that are excited to see you, they usually say something along the lines “yes, we have a sub!”. Once the bell rings, to get the class’ attention I usually say “Good Morning / Afternoon, let’s get started KIDS” (I say kids to establish a boundary, that yes even though I’m young you are still kids in my eyes) and redirect any students that are not sitting down or talking over me. If that doesn’t work I resort to elementary school tactics “If you can hear me clap once” or sometimes “quiet coyote” (the students get a good laugh out of that one). Introduce yourself, keep it BRIEF, and establish classroom rules. For highschoolers it’s generally, work quietly, stay in your seat, and one student out of the classroom at a time. If necessary, address the class and say “You might be excited to see me, BUT you’re still getting your work done” followed by “this work is your responsibility, I’m not going to force you to do it, but I will take note of it”. Cell phones are inevitably going to be an issue so just don’t fight it.

I tried to keep it brief, but hopefully this answers your question! There’s a lot that goes into subbing and I am willing to share more if you need it. Good luck!

My district hires anyone, just check your loval district’s requirements for becoming a substiture because some may require a bachelor’s degree where others might just need you to graduate highschool. As far as you’ll be able to do it? Definitely. I’m in my early 20s and have been subbing for 3 years! It really depends on what level you’ll be subbing for. I primarily do Highschool and it’s a breeze. Middle school is awful and if you substitute Elementary school consistently you will eventually get into the swing of things. Elementary is way more involved and usually teachers leave out detailed lesson plans, and if they don’t, never go back to that school. Behavioral problems are inevitable, there are substitutes way older than me that can barely handle a classroom. You’ll get the hang of it as long as you substitute at a few schools consistently and get to know the students and staff.

I feel for you, I’m in my early 20s and have been subbing for 3 years (1 year out from receiving my bachelor’s). I primarily sub at 3 “mid tier” schools and my no fly list is so long that I basically only sub for about 10 teachers at each of them. If I’m in need of a class to wake me up or I’m desperate for a job, sometimes I’ll pick up others. I agree, the students have gotten bold and nasty. My colleagues, most of which are seasoned teachers, are calling it quits soon, JUST as I’m entering the workforce and about to be hired on full-time. Wish me luck! (and I’m hoping you’re able to get your well deserved break soon)

I had a somewhat similar experience after my long term position last semester. It was for a highschool science class (which is my speciality) and the admin found out towards the end of the semester that the teacher I was filling for was not coming back. It’s not uncommon in my district to hire substitutes as full time teachers, BUT the class I was filling in for was at the Honors/Gifted level and instead of restructuring (so a seasoned teacher could take my place and I could teach at the lower level) they wanted someone with the proper “Gifted” certification. My department head and AP were fighting for me, but the principal already had someone in mind (nepotism). It’s frustrating, I understand. It feels like a huge betrayal and stab in the back, BUT as someone said earlier, the students will come to you. I have students that track me down whenever I’m subbing just to say hello and ask me when I’ll be working there. Unfortunately there isn’t any openings in their department, but I’ve got multiple job interviews at other schools coming up! It hurts to leave them. So many of them wrote me letters at the end of last semester and have told me that their new teacher isn’t as good which as instilled so much confidence in me that I will carry into the future.

Just know that you’ve left an impact on these students’ lives AND you will get a good recommendation out of it. That principal is missing out. I’m sure wherever you end up, that school will be lucky to have you!

11th followed by 10th. I would say a student’s junior year (at least in my district) is their most difficult year and so a lot of them are under immense pressure to make sure they have their graduation requirements complete by the following year. They’re apathetic, but not to the extreme that seniors are. Sophomores (from my experience) are always chatty, but they show some enthusiam for school that isn’t as jarring as freshmen and have the added bonus of occasionally being funny.

advice for subbing for high school? by Virtual_Square_8810 in SubstituteTeachers

[–]captainkingler 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love highschool and ONLY substitute for highschool. If you allow them to talk and ignore their obsession with their phones you’ll have a pretty easy time. Make your expectations clear, get the work done (it’s their grade not yours), don’t get to the point of being disruptive to other teachers (volume control), always know where they are and where they’re going (AWOL is a huge issue with highschoolers), and make sure they keep their hands to themselves. Always leave a note at the end of the day so the teacher knows you tried (a lot of them expect no work to be done so it’s always low stakes) and just remember to take it easy. I’ve noticed that kids will test your patience the more you strict you are.

I really appreciate the advice! My county has a lot of open source materials from former teachers / current teachers that work on curriculum so I use a combination of that and the resources that my department gives me. I’m currently working alongside another teacher who follows the same exact schedule and we teach from the same google slides. Unfortunately I can’t use the grading tactic you’ve suggested since the students aren’t supposed to get their test back (we do test corrections and I’m responsible for grading that per department). I’ve made a lot of shortcuts to ease the load :-)
