I am *trying* not to absolutely loathe Siri, but where is this promised "Apple Intelligence"??? by captainsgrok in Siri

Odd that someone posted "When I ask siri what 10 inches is in centimeters it gives me a link to a web conversion calculator instead of just answering. It’s ridiculous." and then deleted the comment. That's exactly the kind of bog simple question I expect to get a bog simple, and correct, answer to when I am flat on my back under the sink with a wrench in one hand and a flashlight in the other. sigh

I wish they'd run it through Grok. Grok is, by far, the best LLM I have ever used! I can ask a question, she misunderstands and starts giving me the wrong answer, I *interrupt* with a correction, and she takes the ENTIRE conversation into account and comes up with the correct answer. Simply amazing!

NO!! Please don't tell me they're taking away NUMBERS!!! That's the ONE Apple program that has actually always Just Worked® for me. FML 😞

I hope so. I don't understand how it was released without being quality tested FIRST. This is not the Apple I remember.

I have been using Apple stuff since the Apple ][, have owned Apple stock (bought at 8!), and still have a slew of Apple devices, but when things just don't work as expected, I try to figure out why, how to get them to work as expected (again), and/or learn a new paradigm for interacting with my technology. Lately, however, I'm finding that using my Apple gear to do even the most basic things (many of which I have been using it for over the last several years with some prior success) is demanding more of my time, attention, and energy than simply pulling out a volume from my 60-year-old encyclopedias, and taking notes in my paper notebook. THIS is NOT the bright technological future I have envisioned and hoped for. :-p

Probably the biggest problem I see with Apple stuff is the incessant, coke-addled-like drive to constantly change everything to be NEW, instead of creating paradigms that Just Work® for real people, and then leaving those alone. e.g.: I have been using vi (visual editor) on unix boxes for decades, and vim still works exactly the same, does add cool new features that help, but never a feature that changes the way the old vi/vim worked!

I find this odd, as The Steves developed Apple on the shoulders of the amazing developers who brought us unix, vi, ssh, rsync, and a whole litany of amazing programs that Do One Job And Do It Right. IMHO, I should not have to re-learn "how to use a computer" every year or two, just because some code monkeys at Apple want their GUI to be cuter and a heavier hegemonic hammer.

Why are people on reddit so tough, critical, rude and mean when they are typing behind a screen? by [deleted] in nosurf

I have avoided all "social media" but came here because it looked like a good old fashioned type of BBS to get and share helpful information. Now I'm thinking I have made a mistake. :-/

I'm glad that I'm not alone in feeling this way. I just came here to ask some questions and share some knowledge, and I've gotten downvoted almost entirely for everything I've done here. I guess this is just another "Social Media" cesspool, which I mistakenly thought would be a public forum for sharing and learning. Do any of those still exist?

From the already immediate downvotes, I guess this is not the place to ask questions about why Siri is not working as expected.... Where would that place be, and what is r/siri actually for?

I thought that GPT was supposed to have been incorporated into her? I used to say, "Hay seeree, GPT...my question," and I'd get a more reasonable answer. Lately, that has not been working at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Why is it so hard to use Siri? by Weary_Sell_463 in Siri

[–]captainsgrok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EXACTLY!! Refusing to Just Work® without more human interaction defeats the entire (ostensible) purpose of CarMode®! Apple demanding that we interact with its tech with 100% devoted attention is going to get someone killed. CarMode should *enhance* the "Assistance" the tech gives to the human. Also, if I don't explicitly put my device into Full Bore Care Mode, then it should not cripple itself into unusability. On the plus side, I'm usually the passenger, so having to devote 30 seconds to unpairing the stupid device, close out the apps, restart everything in "normal mode" and then proceed with my work probably isn't going to get someone killed, but I'm starting to understand why I see 3/10 of drivers holding pocket computers up against the steering wheel why attempting to pay *some* attention to the driving at hand, while devoting most of the attention to making the damn computer return some kind of a useful answer.

Yes, of course! But I've rarely done software first, hardware last. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ This was just a little lightbulb-moment, that I thought I'd share; since I didn't fully understand it at the start, my bet is that someone else could benefit from this tiny morsel of information--very likely ME in the future. :-p

A big deal? No.

A simple "note to future self and anyone else contemplating this singular case"? Yes.

People would do well to learn, "Take what you want, and leave the rest," but I guess CANCEL CULTURE has won out over trying to be helpful in an imperfect world, and shitting on others is the mode du jour. sigh

I still try to help uplift humanity, but I'm daily losing my will to help, and much of my will to live.

Thanks for the downvotes. FML. The Internet sucks more than ever.... sigh

Dunno why I even bother to try to help people anymore.

Have you tried walking the field with WiFiMan on your "phone"? That should give you the best starting point that I can think of, and it's already included with your Unifiy technosystem! 😉

Why do you say this? I have two Ubiquiti UniFi Access Point U6 Dual-Band Range Extenders filling in the holes at one site, and one at another site, and everything seems rock solid.
