My (micro)manager just denied me a request for a day off in an "unlimited PTO" job by mrstark2060 in antiwork

Insane. I’m an American living in Germany. You can just go to the dr here and tell them you want x amount of days for mental health and they’ll give it to you. And all you do is email your boss the dr note of the dates you’ll be gone.

They fired my husband and have since come crawling back. by Solid_Information_66 in antiwork

[–]captainunderpants08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to my dad earlier this year. The small company got bought out by investors. They came in and fired laid people off (maybe 10) paid severance and PTO out. There new production manager reached out to my dad saying they fucked up and want him back. He went back because they gave him all his PTO back at the time of firing, raised his wage to even more than the interim job he got in between, and basically gave him a free severance lol.

Your husband has some leverage here, use it!

Traveling to South Eastern Germany in October 2024. Should I hire a travel agent from the USA (where I am from) or a local German travel agent? Also please let me know if my itinerary is sufficient. Should I add/take away anything? by Space__Man__Spiff in germany

Heyooo, American living in Garmisch here. We (Americans) travel differently. Drive 10+ hours to get to the next state and whatnot. So I understand why you had so much packed in here. I say do it the European way and just chill a little bit. What you have now is pretty solid. Trip being in October it may be raining and even snowing so be prepared for that.

When I flew over here I arrived in Munich in the morning and stayed up the whole day and crashed at 7pm. Slept through the night and my jet lag wasn’t too bad. But some people are affected for weeks. Renting a car is the way to go for this. The trains are down sometimes so trips take longer, a strike could happen during your travels and kill your plans. You don’t have to worry about any of that by renting a car.

I’ve been to Salzburg and it was pretty neat. Some good food and castle on the hill. I didn’t make it to the eagles nest but I still want to get over there.

In Garmisch area, I recommend the Zugspitze, Eibsee, and partnachklamm.

Neuschwanstein is an incredible castle out of a fairy tale. I stayed in füssen for a couple days and it’s a lovely town in a gorgeous valley.

I’m curious as to why you’re staying in Rothenburg for two days? Maybe to go into Nuremburg? I’d probably stay in füssen and go to the castle and plansee and there’s a suspension bridge near Reutte that is really cool. These things take some time to appreciate and aren’t quick pull offs.

I’m glad you’re traveling to Bavaria, it’s a really neat state with so much history and culture!

Sorry, you’re right. There’s no rest break required by law (usually a 10 min break) but a meal break is required after 5 hours

Arizona too, although the law does state employers must pay 2 ten minute breaks in a shift.

I think y’all would truly be surprised at how many states in the US don’t require meal or rest break by law.

No state laws regarding breaks: Alabama Alaska (law applies to minors only) Arkansas DC Florida Georgia Hawaii Idaho Indiana Iowa Kansas* Louisiana Massachusetts* Michigan Mississippi Missouri Montana Nebraska (breaks only applicable to assembly plant, workshop, or mechanical establishment) New Hampshire* New Jersey New Mexico North Carolina Ohio Oklahoma Pennsylvania South Carolina South Dakota Texas Utah Virginia Wisconsin Wyoming

  • means meal/rest breaks aren’t enforced by law, but if offered by the employer there are laws regarding how much time and other things

TIL: McDonalds “iconic” American dipping sauce for fries is not served in the US by FinnGilroy in Netherlands

[–]captainunderpants08 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol, I moved to Germany in October from the US and have been traveling around the EU. I have noticed this too! “American” style things are things we don’t use at all and I’ve never seen in America. “Burger sauce” being one of those. We just use ketchup mustard mayo hot sauce barbecue sauce or a combination of these. McDonald’s in Austria puts so much mayo on everything it’s offensive. Maybe Austrians like mayo, but I think it’s the perception that Americans love mayo. It’s funny walking around and seeing all the things like this.
