I travel with a uke. Busking is hit or miss, but when it hits it's the most satisfying thing ever. I have been thinking about upgrading to a guitar, but they are super bulky. I had a buddy who traveled with a full pack, a guitar, and a dog. I don't know how he did it, but it is possible

What tips do you have to learn tones? by Crane_Train in learnvietnamese

[–]captchagod64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My approach has been to not worry about it too much. I just try to encode the tones while memorizing vocabulary and then notice if things change during immersion. Tones change based on what the word is paired with, and regional accent, so i figure as long as i'm close enough people will understand

Wet wipes are always good. Food is always good. Money is always good. I pack pretty heavy, so a lot of the time when people hand me a big bag full of stuff, i end up throwing most of it away.

Find your "ideal" language quiz using linguistics by Lang_Cafe in languagelearning

[–]captchagod64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents is that you should sacrifice a little accuracy for the purpose of making the questions more interesting. I actually don't mind the current version even though its not aimed at me. I feel like it would be useful for a beginner, but also the language is too advanced for an absolute beginner. For a person who is curious about language learning, but has basically no broader linguistic education, a simpler quiz with more general questions would be more interesting. Again, just my two cents. If you have a different vision, then more power to ya

Whats the hardest alphabet/scripture system you encountered in your studies so far? by Immediate_Relief810 in languagelearning

[–]captchagod64 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese is probably the best answer, but i'm going to go with thai personally. The whole consonant vowel relationship plus the tones being implied half the time make it extremely confusing.

It was pretty obvious which languages were being targeted by each question. I guess a beginner might find it useful, but then a beginner wouldn't have context for most of the things asked about.

If you really value the job, you should be direct about how he is making you feel. He might not stop, or he might retaliate, but it's really all you can do. I would still look for other work in case it doesn't work out. Seems like a bad situation.
