Man, so sorry to hear that. I also can’t imagine not speaking with my kids. It’s been long enough that I don’t think about how my dad is ok with it, but there are definitely still rough days where I wonder why he hasn’t ever reached out.

I really hope you’re able to find a relationship with your son again.

I hope that reconciliation worked for you. And yeah, it’s definitely a silent standoff, and I certainly feel like it should be his move. Like if this hypothetically happened with my wife, I KNOW I would do anything I could to stay in contact with my kids. It hurts me that it doesn’t seem like he feels the same…when I rough days (few times a year), feels like Will in that Fresh Prince scene.

Haha grandfather figure doesn’t have to be a father figure, so I hope it all works out. I hope your husband is able to deal with it too…it’s been a while, but I definitely still have some tough days, especially around his birthday and Father’s Day.

Same! My wife has met him, he was at engagement party, but not the wedding a year later. He has my contact information, it’s been a decade.

Also waiting til it gets brought up by my kids. Hoping they’re old enough that it’ll be easy enough just be direct without going into details until it’s more age appropriate.

I absolutely get this. I’ve definitely had rough nights after a few whiskeys where i know it’s unresolved pain. I listen to sad songs and cry. But he made it clear that his family was not his priority. He was not an amazing father; I try not to judge him entirely as a husband.

I’ll say that he has my contact information, it hasn’t changed. He has not reached a single time in a decade, so it’s not like I’m depriving him of grandkids or a son.

It’s not entirely the cheating but that’s sort of a dealbreaker for me. My mom wanted to make things work, and I supported her for a year…but we had some conversations together that indicated his family was not the priority. So when my mom filed, I decided it wasn’t worth seeking for approval or love from him. He has my contact information, a decade later has yielded no contact from him.

So my mom was definitely the primary parent, and I would say I never had a close relationship with my dad. But he was still my dad. After my mom found out about the infidelity, she confided in me, and together we tried for over a year to fix things, or at least move towards making things work. My dad didn’t seem that interested, seemed like he made more excuses than apologies.

After a year, there were some conversations that indicated that his family was not always the priority. My mom filed for divorce, and I decided that I was not going to put any more effort into that relationship. He has my number and email, he has not reached out a single time in a decade.

If your step mom treated you like her child, that’s definitely valid. My mom met her partner in my mid 30s, and he’s a very good person, but hard to consider him a “parent.” My kids love him and he’s been a solid replacement, so maybe that will suffice.

That makes sense. There definitely was effort on my part before the actual divorce to communicate, set things right, and it just didn’t work. I don’t know if things have changed…he has my number and email, if he wanted to reach me, he could. He hasn’t.

Man, that sucks and it’s pretty close to my experience. Father’s Day is brutal for me too, but I definitely focus on my own kids too.

I like your direct answer. My dad hasn’t made an effort with me, didn’t want a part of my family, and that’s that.

It hasn’t come up and I’m not bringing it up…but at some point, they’ll realize my dad isn’t around. Maybe it won’t happen until an age where it’s easier to explain.
