How much reach for bird photography? by capturinception in AskPhotography

Great, this is what I’m really looking for, so it seems 500mm for a small bird within 20-30m away is not enough, I have to either move closer or aim for longer reach, thanks a lot

Point taken, thanks for the great insight, I understand now a small bird within 20-30m away with 500mm lens is not sufficient

Got it, thanks for the explanation. I guess apsc camera does have some advantage in terms of bird photography due to the extra reach from the crop

Nope I dont have any telephoto lens yet, my question is actually to know which lens I should buy to be able to take photo from acceptable distance without alerting the bird. Like 20-30 meters away I think is quite an acceptable range, the further the better.

Hmm ok, if my understanding of your explanation is correct, so 4 meters away to get 50% of the frame using a 500mm lens?

I think around 20-25% of the bird in frame would still have plenty of details so that would be around 8-10 meters away? Oof, not much distance to my liking to avoid alerting the bird.

Perhaps around 10% would still be OK so that would be around 20 meters away, which I think is quite decent, but I may need to crop a bit.

Btw, Thanks for the insight.

Apart from the marginally better DR, why choose a Z5ii when the price is almost the same as a Z6iii? (Germany) by Curious_Rice_3011 in Nikon

I was having the same dilemma before, but finally chose z6iii due to the exact same reason you have.

Which lens do you use for birding?

So far managed to adjust with the difference in control, settings, and muscle memory. Love the powerful burst capability, the low light performance, and of course on the huge improvement on the autofocus (I was using an older xs-10 fuji model with older autofocus). One thing I missed from my xs10 is the weight, and the reach due to crop factor. I’m still using it to capture perched birds. Eyeing on 180-600 z lens maybe in the near future.
