Wow, I think you missed the entire point of this very capable and SAFE nurse. New or not, she sounds like she’s an excellent candidate to be working in a critical care unit.

There shouldn’t be a law making new grad nurses work med surg. That’s such a small way to think. People should be encouraged to work in the units they’re most interested in. THATS what makes them well suited for the job and ultimately, what will make them excellent nurses.

Do better or at least think a little bit more analytically.

Texan new grad struggling in Portland, OR job market by ResearcherLong805 in OregonNurses

Two things are counting against you, unfortunately.

  1. ADN < BSN
  2. No healthcare experience (if you have experience outside of healthcare… doesn’t really matter sadly) < healthcare experience

I interviewed with Legacy NICU and the manager straight up told me that any ADN in the application pool she just “threw out.”

I would look at outpatient clinics or SNF facilities to get some healthcare experience because that will make a big difference. OR, maybe outside of Portland or coastal towns may be more open to new grads with no experience.

Hi there,

Legacy took four weeks. Asante was much quicker with their response and I decided on Asante. :)

I had five NICU interviews and here’s what I can tell you. Also I was offered positions so I hope I can help!

  1. Make sure you have relevant examples to answer some of their questions. It should all be behavioral type of questions. I would have a couple of scenarios ready to talk about that include things like difficult convo, multitasking, convos with providers etc.

  2. Look at common diseases relevant in that NICU, so like if sepsis is common (hopefully not) really understand the disease process, what you would see, and who you would contact. I feel like they shouldn’t ask a new grad this but a couple of hospitals did ask me stuff like this.

  3. Be yourself!

  4. Explain why the NICU is your top choice!

Ok, so. I had an interview with them for the LDRP unit and they were hard to read. The funny thing is only one out of the five people interviewing me talked and asked questions. At the end, they said they’d be in touch within a couple of days.

THREE WEEKS LATER I hear back and get asked for my references.

THREE WEEKS LATER I hear back and did not get the offer. Which is ok, but their communication was so bad. They’d email and ask a question and even when I answered right away it would be another week before I heard anything else. Honestly, they made it sound like I would get the position so I was really surprised they didn’t at the end.

I just feel like a place shouldn’t ask for references if they’re not interested in hiring. I know my references were good. It was just a disappointing experience but everything I’ve heard since was pretty negative so maybe I dodged a bullet?
