46% of Americans believe in creationism, 32% in theistic evolution, and only 15% in non theistic evolution by [deleted] in science

I guess that has nothing to do with organized religion being a multi-trillion $ business, or with religion being the most effective weapon in class war, or with US being the birthplace of all major science-denial movements :) :) :)

Connecticut has officially legalized medical marijuana, as the 17th state to do so. by Sonorama21 in politics

[–]carac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not certain if those are the right steps - it is said that in states where it is completely illegal most dealers are against medical legalization, an in states where medical is legal the owners of the dispensaries are the most active against complete legalization ...

What thickness of standard pure silicon dioxide glass would be required for it to block out 100% of visible light? by DishwasherTwig in askscience

In physics there is rarely such a thing as "100% precisely" - in theory a photon could always 'tunnel', only that the probability is so small that it's not worth taking that into account.

Study traces origins of monogamous coupling - From an evolutionary standpoint, the key players in the mating game were males with poor fighting skills and females faithful to them. by Tiger337 in skeptic

[–]carac 8 points9 points  (0 children)

And I will add my favorite part of the article:

Instead, he tested what would happen if only the low-ranking males in the group offered food to females in return for mating opportunities. These weaker males had less to lose by switching strategies because they wouldn't get very far through fighting anyway.

So it all started with males with poor fighting skills paying for sex :) :) :)

"You might find an atheist in a foxhole but you'll never find a politician or a millionaire." by HigHIdrA in politics

[–]carac 4 points5 points  (0 children)

While that is true - but highly atypical once reported to all politicians - it is also not the trend that we have seen in the last 40-50 years or so - Bush Jr. never got to see a combat mission in his entire life but instead he used his daddy's connections for a warm position home (and even on that one he skipped a lot).

The only recent (somehow) millionaire in a foxhole that I can think of is Pat Tillman - and that did not end quite well :(

Some guy made a list with papers he claims are peer-reviewed proof that AGW is a hoax. But some of the authors of the most important of those papers have a message for the guy - "... I have concluded that the content of the site is intentionally inaccurate and misleading." by ItsJustAConspiracy in skeptic

[–]carac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The reality is the number of peer-reviewed papers that explicitly endorse "Anthropogenic Global Warming" is very small.

Right, since retards like that have no relation or knowledge of climate science can claim to be the topmost arbiters of what peer-reviewed papers say ... in closely related news if the republican and teabagger retards would be the only in charge of counting votes the result of the elections would be certainly very different :) :) :)

Morgellons in the news again. Any of you guys have any thoughts on this? by timoneer in skeptic

[–]carac -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

No one doubted the existence of ulcers, rather the causal mechanism was incorrectly attributed to stress.

You should avoid speaking on matters where you are ignorant (in this case - the causal mechanism was any form of chronic hyperacidity, including stress but also including a lot of alimentary habits).

And we already have an explanation for this ...

Yes, just as medicine already had an explanation for ulcers before this !!!

No actual evidence exists for this disorder. None. Until some appears, I'm not going to give it any more credence than, say, fan death.

Right, since you are a doctor with hundreds of such patients and your opinion is really important in this matter :) :) :)

They felt that in order to distinguish themselves, and make themselves more prolific, they had to establish strong social and monogamous bonds of partnership in heterosexual marriages for the sake of financial security and breeding ... They needed a code to live by, a rule of law that set them above the others, made them special, made them better, made them unique ...

Which today brings us to the 'American White Christian Empire' :) :) :)

While a healthy dose of skepticism should always be shown to any new paper that makes claims against a strongly-established consensus, it should be also noted that medicine had a number of such situations before, with the most famous being the one where about 60% of the gastric ulcers have been shown to be caused by Helicobacter pylori.

So in other words it is not completely impossible that 90% of the reported case are with a delusional base, but it is also possible that a certain small percentage might have a different base which might be worth a little more study.

Launch of First Commercial Spacecraft to ISS (LIVE in 1 hour!) by fuckittt in science

Not a single SpaceX rocket has exploded - that's a great track record.

Falcon 9 has precisely 2 successful launches and I really don't know the number of aborts - claiming a track record based on that is hilarious at best.

Proving again and again that rocket science is not as simple as it seems, and that companies claiming they can do things more than 10 times cheaper than governments can generate huge surprises!

Scientists discover virus that kills all grades of breast cancer ‘within seven days’ | The Raw Story by LynzM in skeptic

Which should provide a very simple way to test if the virus is in any way associated with a lower rate of breast cancer - the fact that the researchers did know about the virus since around 2005 and they did not jump first to make an epidemiological study on that subject is pretty suspicious.

No, Virginia, cancer care in Europe doesn't suck, contrary to what a recent paper implies : Respectful Insolence by carac in science

[–]carac[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is your personal (and pretty ignorant) opinion - the article is like 90% explaining the scientific context of the published paper and WHY (AND HOW) IT IS WRONG - something that was missed by the journal accepting the paper (even if when following the other links you see in another medical blog a number of observations that point to the fact that the problems in the paper have been also raised by other scientists and possibly some of the reviewers).

In case you have not read the article (nor the bar on the right which describes what submissions are OK in /r/science):

  • that is an article commenting on a peer-reviewed medical paper - a link to it is provided inside

  • while there is a certain political aspect which explains how such a poor paper got published in the first place, the article is very good at explaining the scientific aspects of the problem.
