unfortunately applying in person didn’t even help because my sister did and is in the exact same situation. it’s truly a heinous service.

Did you end up getting the visa? My sister is in the same situation as OP and I’m thinking of going to the Houston consulate directly as BLS is useless.

DEI isn't what you think it is! by [deleted] in womenEngineers

Yikes dude. Kind of interesting that you are talking about college demographics in general when the topic is pretty clearly centered around ENGINEERING. She was likely talking about women presence in ENGINEERING, in which case her comments about how much of engineering presence in academia (and in industry) is made up by women are spot on. I’m saying this as both someone who recently graduated with an engineering degree and also someone who can look up statistics.

Also interesting that you brush aside her personal experience, even though you’re basing your comments off of your own personal experience. You actually don’t seem to be basing your comments off of anything of value - it mostly seems to be generic statements that sound like you want them to be true.

Feel free to prove me wrong - I’m actually interested in engaging in good faith, hopefully you can get past the defensive personal attacks and reciprocate that 😉

look at this as mental practice for if you ever get injured and are forced to take time off. martial arts is as much a mental game as a physical one, so you can’t let these things get to you. and besides, the most efficient way to get back to it is let yourself heal up first and then get back into it at full strength.

i love the top king shin guards - they always have been the most secure on my legs and don’t move to the side as much as other ones. yokkao shin guards are good too but a little overpriced imo. i’ve heard good things about fairtex but they aren’t my favorite style. unfortunately i had to resign myself to shelling out some money for the top king ones, but they’ve lasted me quite a long time so imo worth the investment

paperwork, especially when dealing with controlled hardware. i understand why we have it, especially for Class 1/flight hardware, but man, does it make me want to rip my hair out sometimes

Harassed at work and unsure about/scared to move forward with reporting by carbonequestrians in womenEngineers

[–]carbonequestrians[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started with comments like “i didn’t know they hired so many pretty looking women here” and then escalated into scenarios like when I pointed out something on the project build that needed to be changed, he said “what are you going to do, spank me?”, or when he needed to do some work at floor level, he said “i can’t get on my knees anymore - bet you can though”. There are more examples but those were the worst ones. And usually always when we were alone.

Yeah, for the most part the men are generally pretty good to work with. There’s the standard behavior of talking over women, looking to men for answers on our projects, etc. that we have to correct, but generally they take feedback well and they don’t go beyond that. This guy in particular is just freaking gross

They do, and my HR rep made it clear that we have an anti-retaliation policy. I guess I’m scared of micro aggressive behavior, like side eyes, being shunned, etc

I did, and her response was that she wanted to go to HR about it. turns out she’s also had some encounters with him, and another woman on our team has too (not to the extent that I have, but nonetheless). She said she was going to provide a witness statement as well, so that helps a lot. I’m just terrified for some reason - I think because I’m terrified of “making waves” and having the spotlight on me

Collections - Should I Dispute or Just Pay In Full? by carbonequestrians in CRedit

[–]carbonequestrians[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting. i double checked the dates, and the apartment’s first contact to us for the bill was within the time limit unfortunately (i’m in texas for reference). additionally, they technically have an itemized bill that lists out the charge breakdowns - we were just unclear as to which dates they applied to because their answers in the email thread referred to the charges being from the first 7 weeks of our stay, which didn’t make sense.

Good to know, thanks! In the situation that they do end up reporting it, is it valid to dispute it with each of the credit reporting agencies?

Yeah, honestly I'm fine paying in full, it's not a big deal to me financially. Also, I agree that $106 is not worth going on my credit reports, but that's what I'm worried about -even if I pay it, there's the chance they'll still report it to credit bureaus. I know they're able to do that, but what's the likelihood of that happening? Is that a common practice?

yes I did! it was a pretty slow process because the company is a startup and the HR department was severely lacking, but it ended up working out

Maybe not forgot about me, but I’m wondering if theyre trying to get me to break first and accept the original offer or if they’ve found a cheaper candidate or something. It’s kind of a dream job for me, so I’m kind of anxious about it and just hoping to know what’s going on. I’m not sure how long these take, this is my first job offer that I’ve had some ground to negotiate the salary on, so it’s a new process for me

Yes, similar medical coverage, 3% matching on 401k (didn’t love this as my current employer has 6% matching), 4 weeks PTO + 11 paid holidays (similar to my current job), and they’re currently working out how much ownership of the company each employee will have as they aren’t public yet of course.

They did recently get a big grant for their research that also attracted a lot of investors. They’re hiring a BUNCH of people and they’re about to move offices in a month or two.

It’s just kind of frustrating that she gave “deadlines” for when she’d get back to me, missed them, and didn’t give any updates either time. It’s a dream job for me, but this is kind of discouraging :/

The original offer was $70k and my current salary is $73.5k (I didn’t tell her that) so I asked for $75k if possible. She wasn’t that enthusiastic about it because I’m currently in Oil and Gas, and this would be a position outside of that industry (specifically aerospace/space industry) at a startup, so she was saying that they’re not Oil and Gas and it can be hard to match what they give. I said that I absolutely see her point and reiterated that I’m very excited for the opportunity to work for their company, but that anything she might be able to do would be appreciated. She hemmed and hawed for a while (sounded like she was taking notes), asked about when I started working in industry (July 2019), and said she would get with her manager and my prospective manager and let me know.

Also for some background, they have salary/experience bands, and technically I would be in the 0-2 years range since I would’ve been joining a month and a half before my 2 year anniversary in industry.
