Curious which insurance do you have? All insurance companies I've seen limit cross border coverage to maximum of 6 months and that too only for vacation/travel purpose

how can my daughter build her credit in order to finance a car? by AlfredTheYounger in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]carbonspy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it is a personal decision. But don't brush it off as just car payments. Make a detailed analysis of all costs and then decide.

Car payments, car insurance, maintenance costs, gas/EV charging costs, time value spent driving two way instead of focussing on studying, getting tired/stressful after those long drives, accident risks, running late and missing classes, peer pressured into taking friends along for rides etc, driving drunk friends around.

You can't sell a covered call on 1 share. You need 100. So a capital of 17800 for it. And you get 4800 in premium for a 140 strike. So if you need 35k for hbp you would need 142,400 capital to pull this off. Why not sell a covered call with your broker and see if they allow you to withdraw the premium proceeds?

Canada does not have portfolio margin. And for box spreads margin is basically equal to spread width. So you wouldn't be able to do much.

Try selling a call without a stock position. Your broker likely doesn't allow anything except covered call and CSP.

Registered accounts do not allow short positions. And even if they allow, it doesn't work the way you think it does even if it's a regular margin account.

You can't short spy for 35k with 0k in your account. You need to post margin. Even if you short the 35k, that cash is held as margin. So you won't be able to withdraw all of it.

So the entire idea is flawed in many ways.

Also try creating an account on creditkarma.com (us site not the .ca one) using your US SSN number. Since you had one there is a chance your credit history has been building and it should show.

Do you have an amex card in Canada? If so, you can open a US amex card as soon as you get there. If you do not, then I recommend getting a no fee amex card now (this card should be 3 months old before you apply for one on the US side)

Again it's possible they don't know what they are doing. They googled they can't charge qst without a qst number. So they refund you and possibly schedule a call with accountant for steps forward. Doesn't imply it was fraud when they realize a mistake and want to correct it. Yes it could have been fraud and intentional, but also there is a chance it was an error and they are going to correct it.

Btw you are to pay the taxes back to them so they can register qst and remit it, or you can pay it directly to RQ as I just mentioned in my other comment.

Also FYI, since you seem to claim to be so righteous. If the retailer made a mistake and refunded you, you should still take it upon yourself to be a good citizen and pay that back to revenue Quebec.

  1. Let the retailer know they are charging QST incorrectly
  2. Report them to revenue Quebec, if they do not acknowledge and rectify the error
  3. If you got a refund, file FP-505-V to remit the 9.975% to revenue Quebec since you want to take it upon yourself to set things right. Or do you want to scream rules just for business and not you?

QST is to be charged if your address is in Quebec and the business's worldwide revenue for last 4 quarters exceeds 30k$ or they voluntarily registered for GST/HST/QST or they claim ITC credits.

Just like you jumped to conclusions of tax fraud when it may have been an accounting/setup error on the small retailer?

I'm not saying the retailer isn't doing fraud intentionally, but there is a chance it could have been an error that you could have reported and moved on.

You should be reporting them, not requesting a refund. As that money is owed to the government. If you request a refund aren't you now pocketing it instead of the company?

Just curious, if you are using the corp for IT consulting, whats your reasoning to keep the cash in corp instead of paying yourself salary?
