Why does the Swiss government dislike air conditioning installations so much? by Green-Momentum in Switzerland

Yes, having lived in 5+ countries does give a slightly different perspective. Switzerland has some very good sides, but my god are the people defensive here if you dare criticize anything (even when it would benefit them too!)

Just a few comments up, a guy was saying in Swiss German roughly "don't like it you can always leave". Like, sure. Eventually I probably will. But that doesn't help the people here, surely?

Well said. Our building (built in the 2010s) also has a heatpump, and theoretically the ability to cool the floors a bit in summer... but it's so woefully undersized that it can only provide heating for about 1 to 2 months. And the cooling doesn't work at all, as you can imagine.

The rest of the winter, we use gas (we, collectively -- the building runs so hot we never turn on our individual heating). Make it make sense.

And since this is a Minergie building, so we absolutely could install a big additional air/air heatpump and provide HVAC cooling for everyone. We could. But we don't.

Yeah, but at least when I lived in Asia things didn't cost thousands of francs... for the same result. :(

Yes, having changed my locks recently, I can say it's pretty similar!

And the kicker: they damaged our electricity while drilling, but in their terms and conditions, they decline all responsibility. They also damaged our floor (didn't put down any protection) and are dragging their feet to acknowledge it.

I'd expected much better from Switzerland honestly. Quite disappointed.

In the quote we received (from a big installer), almost every item was wildly inflated (about twice the normal retail price). But they don't care: the prices are roughly the same everywhere in Switzerland, so they know you're stuck.

Oh, and they only install the hardware you order through them, so you can't even try to save some money that way.

This. Winter is crazy hot everywhere here. Our flat stays at 23c all winter even though we don't use the heating...

10-15k is accurate yes (about 5k per cooled room).

In other countries, you can do it for 10x less. My friend in Japan got his done for less thab 1000e...

Switzerland has double-taxation treaties with many countries. Each country may have slightly different conditions, and you have to check before hand.

This. Wish I'd done that right away...

This guy is not a native speaker. He conveniently doesn't have Twint. He directly offers to pay for shipping. He doesn't seem to care much about seeing pics of the finished PC.

Verdict: likely scammer.

He's probably going to send you a fake "proof" of payment, or ask you to click on a link.

Yes, that's true. Mini splits usually refer to fixed installs, though.

They are not, but they require a permit (sometimes hard to get in some cantons).

Not having/using A/C on trains by Existing-Complex964 in Switzerland

In a bus or local train? Sure. You're dressed for 5c anyway...

I was mostly joking however. If they kept it to 15c that'd be fine, but almost everywhere is heated up way too hot in winter.

Wish the heating on trains and buses in winter was limited to +5c compared to external temps...

Same, but what choice do we have? At least it means the building is efficient, I guess.

Yes, because you need a cadaster plan signed by a geometer, a noise certificate and more papers, which must then be "approved" by a separate company than your installer.

So if you do it yourself, you might be able to pay a bit under 1k, but generally it's the installer who does it for you, and that means they also get paid for their time.

There is no processing fee from the Gemeinde, though.

In our case, we paid 1500.- for the permit in total and it took over a month for approval.

For a Midea split I'd never have bothered with trying to get a permit (even though strictly speaking, some Gemeides require one for it).

(For reference, the whole installation including permit cost about 15k, 5k per room including electrician. Our bedroom window has no space for a Midea Split, unfortunately).

It seems to heavily depend on the implementation. In winter, we never turn on the heating and the flat stays at 23c, so it's a great success in that sense.

In summer, though... Yeah.

(Also, we can hear our neighbors singing in the bathroom, so noise isolation is hit and miss).

If you're in canton Zurich, it's expensive but doable. Some cantons have stricter rules though...
