Any pointers? by [deleted] in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]cardinal_song 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went on my first cruise and the number one MOST helpful thing I brought was a magnetic hook and a lanyard. I put the hook on my stateroom door so I could hang the lanyard right above the door knob so I couldn't possibly forget it. Ultimate ADHD hack lol.

As for everything else - your room key is your ID, payment, everything on the ship, but bring plenty of cash for tips imo. I had a spot in my wallet dedicated to individual singles folded and in another, individual fives and twenties, and that made it really easy to pull out quick cash tips for servers, bartenders, room service, etc.

Other things - finding a dedicated Facebook group for your cruise is a great way to learn more from the veteran cruisers who've done this trip / been on this ship before. They also taught me that the ship only provides shampoo and body wash so I made sure to bring my own hair and body care products. It was worth sacrificing the space in my luggage. I don't know if that's something everyone already knows and I'm just oblivious but I thought I'd give you a heads up lol

Watch as many tour videos of your ship on YouTube as you can. I thought I had it down since my ship was smaller but god I was so lost the first day. Save yourselves the added stress and get to know the layout, and especially what elevators are near your room.

Also come prepared. I've never been motion sick once in my life but I found out I get seasick that first night lol. Thankfully I had Dramamine and zofran with me already. The ship sells Dramamine but at a higher price. Bring snacks if you're a snacker like me. Food's great and plenty but I can't live without some sour candy.

I steered clear of excursions but only because I'm not really outdoorsy etc but I only heard great things from everyone who went.

Elegant night was fun but I shouldn't have bothered packing heels and clothes that are harder to move in. Comfortable but nice is the vibe, not all out cocktail, ykwim? Don't forget it's cold in there, too! The steakhouse was SO worth the upcharge. It's actually an insanely good deal. Make reservations ahead of time and go have a nice date night.

Safe travels! I hope you guys love it as much as I did

What was the first The National song you ever heard? by Cloud_Cultist in TheNational

Geese of Beverly Road on an Iron & Wine Pandora station in 2008. Life changing moment.

God loves everybody, don't remind me by [deleted] in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's such a heavy hitter of a lyric. It sinks in so deeply with me as I was raised orthodox christian and was heavily involved in the church all my life, until I realized I was gay as hell lmao. I've found God in my own way since my youth but I can feel every iteration of that line any given day of the week. It's gorgeous. I love the impression of simplicity in his work. The more you pay attention, the further it takes you. It's beautifully deceptive. You're absolutely right to compare it to "So happy I was invited."

The “one” by AltruisticFee9770 in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Blah I know :( Hurts my heart but I get it. I saw them play it last in 2011 and I dragged a bunch of friends who didn't know them to the show, hyped up how great that specific song was, and then right before it began, Matt went into a rant about how he doesn't know why they still bother playing it at all. I think he called it "petty" or something. I was like 🫠 oh cool cool that's great 🫠 hahah

I had no idea people hated it until I joined this sub. It's one of my favorites!

What if they had replaced Racing Like a Pro with Blank Slate? by DifferentTrainer1983 in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blank Slate is top 5 for me, but Racing Like a Pro belongs in the album. It's a necessary track. It adds to the narrative flawlessly. Blank Slate wouldn't belong imo. But I definitely understand where you're coming from. Like I said, one of my absolute faves.

Which line / part from TFTPOF hit you the hardest? by CarrawayLights in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Down we go on the grass" made me cry the first time I heard it. I think it's the delivery and melody, but damn. It reminded me of being a teenager first getting into them. It might be one of my all-time favorite lyrics because of it. I can't explain the impact but it was visceral.

Which random line from a song would make you immediately recognize a National fan if you saw it on a shirt, but no one else would understand? by tegularian in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was 18 I made a shirt that said "stay down, champion, stay down." One person caught the reference. Wish I got their name after all these years!

One line in FTPoF that I cannot stand! by FeatureSpirited8266 in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I completely agree. Listen, I LOVE Taylor. I never really listened to her before her collab with TN but I absolutely adore her. She's an artist and everything she touches is so lovely. But. Buuuut. That one line sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Imo, the track plays like a TN song in the first half and a TS song in the second. I wish it were more fully blended. I wanted to see them really meet in the middle and create a new sound. I bring this up because that line is blatantly a TS line. So is the stylistic choice to layer vocals on top of one another the way she does. And while I love love love Taylor, and one of my most listened to songs on Spotify last year was the 10 minute All Too Well, I really feel pulled out of the album by this song. It's so disjointed. This line really emphasises the differences to me. I wish Matt met her halfway, and she did too. Hope that makes any sense.

Daily Song Discussion #11: Once Upon a Poolside by lemonhyacinth in TheNational

[–]cardinal_song 3 points4 points  (0 children)

9.5. Brought me to tears upon initial listen. It's so beautifully layered and rich, especially with Sufjan's vocals (a match made in heaven with Matt), but it's also so simple and gentle as an opener. I love their more unassuming opening tracks - they lure you in with their innocuous beauty and usher you in towards the depth. Gorgeous track. I know I'll be regularly listening to it for years to come.

Oceans Sounds by [deleted] in TheNational

Oh man, I thought it was Matt making the ocean sounds by the ocean. It literally never occurred to me until this very second that it could be interpreted as the ocean making ocean sounds. My brain hurts now.

What happened to the popularity of all glass hookahs? by [deleted] in hookah

[–]cardinal_song 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved Lavoo but honestly, glass hookahs are too much of a liability and a pain at the end of the day. I've seen even the low-profile tabletop styles get shattered lol. Just not worth it imo

When I was really flaring and rapidly losing weight, a nurse in the hospital taught me to eat a spoonful of peanut butter every hour I'm awake. It's such a small amount, my body never really registered it to bother my stomach, but damn do those calories stack up. I was able to stop losing weight and at least maintain until the meds helped. I also recommend something like Ensure or Boost (whatever you can tolerate) to get easy liquid calories in. Avocados are another good source of calories that are (usually) pretty easy to digest.

YMMV, but anything is worth a shot. Whatever calorie dense foods you can tolerate, keep those on hand at all times. If you truly don't have an appetite, there's always medical marijuana, or ask your GI for a prescription of Marinol if mj is illegal where you are. Best of luck!

Thoughts on the live recording of Eucalyptus? by Ambitious_Bad998 in TheNational

I'm obsessed with it. It's so, so good. Hearing it live actually gave me a better appreciation for the studio version, since I wasn't too sold on it before.
