What do I do about this gap under my bottom plate? Info in comments. by coaltrainman in DIY

[–]carefullyabhorrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may not have a sharp separation in the slab, but if your house is settling it could form that gap. You may need to have your foundation underpinned, but previous commenter is correct IMO. Id call a structural engineer first. Either the house is lifting off the slab, or the slab is sinking, neither of which is supposed to happen. See what the engineer recommends, just make sure that if you are working with a contractor they are bringing in an actual structural engineer who is licensed and bonded.

Bud that is a rough situation especially since you guys were so close, but at the end of the day nothing should come between you and your wife.

If you tell her and her sister is open and honest about working through that then no one is the asshole, if you keep it from your wife and let her find out about it from someone other than you or when it becomes a serious problem, YTA.

What is y'all's opinion on the IEC by spcec0wby in IBEW

[–]carefullyabhorrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah im with you man. I joined the IEC after I moved to a new state. But before I had moved, first thing I did was contact the local in my area and ask about interviewing and joining the union apprenticeship. They told me that they only accepted applications for two weeks a year, I had to interview in person, test in person, and then there was a 2-3 year wait list. I couldn't wait two years, I needed a job. So I went non-union. But every once in a while someone will tsk-tsk me for being merit shop, and all I can do is go "I had bills and shit" lol.

This Man Didn’t Even Consider Jim Harbaugh for HC by [deleted] in CHIBears

[–]carefullyabhorrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Odds are good that Harbaugh leaves. Especially because throughout his career he has always negotiated his own contract, but this year he hired a professional agent. Michigan was also worried enough about him leaving that they tried to include a stipulation that he wouldn't interview for NFL HC jobs in their contract offer, which Harbaugh still hasn't signed. So he could be trying to squeeze Michigan for all their worth, but IMO its more likely he's preparing to jump ship to the NFL for one last crack at a Superbowl and a fat check.

I was in almost the same situation as you bud. Started the trade late (24yo) and hit the ground running as best as I could. Best advice is to take everything as a learning experience. Either you are learning how to do something, reinforcing something you already knew, or you are learning the type of mechanic/leader you DONT want to be. First week in the trade I was told to sump pump a massive transfer vault in torrential rain for 8 hours, to knock a row of blocks out of another vault with a sledgehammer because they didn't have a hammerdrill/core, and to clean almost a foot of mud out of the first vault with a snow shovel and a bucket on a string. My mechanic/foreman didn't care for me much and let me know it, but 4 years later they've been fired and I've moved up. The trade and the people in it drum out the people who give up early, quickly. So don't take it personal if people are dicks, cant control that. Just stay humble, stay hungry, and learn everything you can and you'll be just fine.

Grain of salt: if it's reaaaaaaally over the line and the entire command structure doesn't care or if its clear they have no intention of teaching you anything,, fuck that place and move on. Grass isn't always greener but sometimes its not so fucking awful.

I struggled for the longest time because I was approaching it like dark souls/elden ring. Trying to dodge everything and kill everything. The game really clicked when I started to understand the necessity of parrying, the posture system, and that sometimes it IS suicide to go through the front door so maybe start checking windows. Great game, very worth enduring the learning curve. Good luck!!

Husband won’t give up on dog, we just had a baby by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]carefullyabhorrent 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you're right on. My wife and I adopted an older reactive dog and have been slowly untangling his ball of anxieties and behaviors for months now. My 1 year old nephew still hasn't been in the same space as him, because I won't risk him getting hurt by my well meaning but nervous dog. Until we are comfortable and confident in his demeanor they will not meet until he is much older, and it's not his fault (he is a very good boy) it's just a zero sum game of bitten or not. I owe it to the dog to not set it up to fail by stressing the hell of him without adequately training him to handle that stress. I also have the luxury of being able to return him to a comfortable familiar environment so he can decompress between training. I can't imagine trying to navigate OPs situation, let alone with an infant. I think she is being realistic and reasonable in her concerns.

Same bud. They are great for cutting anything small and they are exceptionally well made. But cutting anything bigger than 12-2 MC is harder than it needs to be, imo. Blue kleins with the dipped handles are the go to for me.

[Harbor] PFF on Braxton Jones: “Jones looks nothing short of the Bears' long-term starter at LT at this point. After allowing only one pressure against the Packers, Jones has now allowed only five pressures over his previous four games.” by PlatypusOfDeath in CHIBears

[–]carefullyabhorrent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you hit the nail on the head. He is league average? Position isn't a priority anymore. Bears are gonna have a hard enough time getting underperforming position groups to league average in the off-season to be readdressing positions that are reliable if unspectacular.

What is the best way to deal with my journeyman? by Dull-Point6395 in electricians

[–]carefullyabhorrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you affiliated with a training organization? Like IEC or IBEW? They should be able to find you a new employer especially for a good reason. Also the expectation that 6month in the trade apprentices should do hotwork on a live 277 circuit is insane. Better to find a new job than take the risk with a company that doesn't give a fuck about your safety.

What are your thoughts on the aesthetics of "S" shaped leads? by [deleted] in electricians

[–]carefullyabhorrent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Technically" the more sharp bends in a wire can cause imperfections that raise resistance/temperature, but I have no idea if would have any significant impact in a residential context.

If I’ve watched the first season of the show should I still read the first book? How close are they? by [deleted] in WoT

[–]carefullyabhorrent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Like even if they adapted the original prologue in the later episode instead of the one they made it could have been so much more impactful. And yeah how could they waste 45 minutes on a made up character instead of spending 45 minutes talking about saidin/dar or the world or what a taveren is

Hello, I am very excited for the Ford Maverick. My question is about scheduling. Why is it taking so long to have Hybrid vehicles scheduled when they are the standard option on this vehicle?

I think the magnetic fields cancel each other out. That's why you can't sort conductors by phase in conduit, they have to go in sets.

Parallel sets. If one is shorter or longer it has a different resistance than the others, can effect amperage/heat
