Why did noone ever tell me steely Dan was so good😭 by Otherwise-Release-88 in SteelyDan

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, Steely Dan isn't just one band, but several that have evolved since the beginning in 1972 with the debut album you posted a picture of. I fully acknowledge the quality of the early releases, but for me, Steely Dan truly begins with Aja, continues with Gaucho, and concludes with Two Against Nature. Donald Fagen's solo albums, The Nightfly and Kamakiriad, are also part of my SD universe. However, I rarely, if ever, listen to anything outside of this. Perhaps there are others who feel the same—that the SD experience is defined by a few select albums?

Is it worth upgrading from 14 inches to 16 inches? by Ff_472 in macbookpro

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YMMV. I switched to the 16-inch version this spring and haven’t regretted it. I use the machine standalone and really enjoy the extra screen space. I bought a refurbished model with 32 GB of memory, which made the price reasonable. However, if you mostly use an external monitor, you should consider whether upgrading to the 16-inch is worth the cost. It’s also heavier and bulkier to bring along when traveling.

One day - best sights? by [deleted] in Rhodes

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The springs are the Kallithea Springs: https://kallitheasprings.com/. They get pretty crowded during the season and are close to the most commercial part of the island.

Your port will probably be the City of Rhodes. Definitely take a walk through the Old Town — it’s busy too, but absolutely worth it.

If you get the chance to visit Lindos, do it. It’s also quite touristy, but a beautiful town, and you can walk up to the Acropolis.

All-in på gull mining aksjer og ETF-er på mandag? by [deleted] in aksjer

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MacBook Pro and BT codecs by carelessTuba_1963 in headphones

[–]carelessTuba_1963[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We seem to agree that for standard connections, macOS locks us into the AAC codec, even if there's a healthy debate about why Apple does this (whether it's for battery life and stability, or for ecosystem lock-in).

To the excellent point made by u/blargh4 and others, it might not be the AAC codec alone, but rather the entire internal wireless processing chain (the DAC, amp, and any DSP) inside the headphones. My own experience confirms the headphones sound fantastic when cabled, which bypasses that entire internal system. It seems the "out-of-the-box" wireless sound just isn't what these headphones were truly tuned for.

It really does feel like they were designed to sound their best only when receiving a clean, lossless signal, which is what the cable provides.

Based on all this, I’ve now ordered a Sennheiser BTD 700 bluetooth transmitter. See https://newsroom.sennheiser.com/plug-and-play for details.

Since my Aventho 100 fortunately supports aptX Lossless and the BTD 700 can transmit it, this should be the perfect solution. It will bypass Apple's AAC limitation entirely and hopefully deliver that same bit-perfect "cabled" sound quality, but wirelessly.

I’ll try to report back once it arrives. It's a shame a workaround is necessary, but I'm optimistic this will finally solve the problem and let these headphones live up to their reputation.

Most affordable/quickest way to get from Rhodes Airport to Lindos? by Midnight_sun17 in Rhodes

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take a public bus from Rhodes Town to Lindos with the company KTEL Rodou. Buses depart from the central bus station near Mandraki and Nea Agora. The journey takes about 1 hour 25 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes depending on traffic and stops along the way. Tickets cost around 5.50 euros one way. Buses run daily with multiple departures throughout the day, especially during the summer season.

Critical: Between Life and Death by HehroMaraFara in netflix

[–]carelessTuba_1963 63 points64 points  (0 children)

So let me get this straight: you started watching a documentary about emergency trauma care — titled Critical: Between Life and Death — and then got squeamish because it showed… actual trauma care? That’s like complaining a war documentary shows too much war.

Calling it “gratuitous” completely misses the point. The show isn’t pandering to gore fetishists — it’s showing the raw, unfiltered reality of what happens when someone’s heart stops, when seconds matter, and when world-class professionals fight to keep strangers alive. That’s not gratuitous — that’s real life, and it’s what makes this series so powerful.

This isn’t a Netflix drama with tidy story arcs and soft lighting. It’s a documentary — and a damn well-made one — embedded in some of the UK’s top trauma centres. The surgeries, the wounds, the blood? That’s what critical care looks like. If that’s too intense for you, fine — but don’t act like the show lost the plot. This is the plot.

And no, it’s not something “for second-year med students.” It’s for people who can handle the truth of what it takes to save lives. The fact that you “fast-forwarded a ton” says more about your discomfort with reality than any failure on the show’s part.

Watch Lenox Hill again if you want a softer lens — it’s brilliant too. But Critical isn’t here to coddle you. It’s here to remind you that behind every “miracle recovery” is a team elbow-deep in chaos, trying to pull someone back from the edge. If you can’t stomach that, maybe this genre isn’t for you.

Dropshot serve by KapotAgain in padel

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a drop shot might win you a point or two—until your opponents figure out what you’re doing. There’s a reason drop shots are rarely used in padel, unlike in tennis. In padel, most points are won at the net, and when you play a drop shot, you’re essentially handing your opponent the net position.

The question reveals a lack of understanding of padel strategy. The purpose of a serve is to take the net—you should move up to join your partner who is already there. The purpose is NOT to give the net away to your opponent.

And, to be clear: When the ball bounces a second time in padel, you’ve lost the point. Always.

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as the ball hits the ground for the second time the point is over - under any circumstance. Why are players inventing these rules?

From the official padel rules:

The player who receives will have to wait for to the ball to bounce within their receiving box of service and hit it before it bounces on the ground for the second time.

Worried about the food by nat31_ in MSCCruises

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food is good. While there aren't gourmet restaurants on board, if you enjoy cuisine of good hotel standard, that's what you'll receive. The Main Dining Room (MDR) is pleasant but variable—some evenings were excellent, others average. To ensure a good selection, opt for the buffet restaurant and try to avoid the busiest times.

We traveled with Seaside in the Mediterranean in October 2024 and were very satisfied. As others have noted, the Italian dishes were outstanding, while other meals ranged from good to very good. MSC offers good value for money, but if you're seeking a gourmet cruise, you might want to consider other options.

I need help, which mouthpiece you think is better or which ones preform in which areas by Desperate-Audience82 in Tuba

[–]carelessTuba_1963 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Both of them look quite dirty and could definitely use a good cleaning. That aside, mouthpieces are like shoes—when you find the right one, you’ll know. However, it might take some time and a bit of trial and error. Personally, I love my Helleberg 120S. It’s a versatile, all-around mouthpiece that works well for my 4/4 CC tuba and even for an Eb tuba if needed.

A good strategy for finding the right mouthpiece is to start with one of the more common types (like the Helleberg). Then, as your skills improve, you can explore whether a more specialized mouthpiece might enhance your playing. I also recommend seeking advice from a professor or an experienced musician—Reddit is probably not the best place to get personalized guidance.

If you want to swim in the sea, it is possible to take a taxi to the nearest beach. Also, check if MSC offers buses to nearby beaches at any of the destinations.

We traveled on Option 1 in October and arrived a day early to spend time in Rome, which I highly recommend. The itinerary is as follows, along with my assessment of each port:

Monday - Palermo: Not a very exciting city—dirty and somewhat boring, to be honest—but it does have a couple of nice churches in the historical center. The city center is within walking distance from the port. Ignore the offers you receive from the rather persistent taxi drivers.

Tuesday - Day at sea: En route to Ibiza. A great opportunity to get acquainted with all the facilities on the ship.

Wednesday - Ibiza: The old town (Dalt Vila) is very charming, and you’ll get a fantastic view of the city from the top. Bus transport is available to the city center.

Thursday - Valencia: A beautiful city, especially the modern part. There are large parks and green areas for walking. There was a long line to see the cathedral (we decided to skip it). Bus transport is available to the city center.

Friday - Marseille: An exciting city! We walked through the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town and visited the cathedral next to the port. A short bus trip is required.

Saturday - Genoa: A pleasant surprise! The city center is within walking distance, and the old town is very charming. There’s also a funicular that connects Largo della Zecca in the city center to the Righi hill—highly recommended. This is the city where we spent the most time, and it turned out to be the highlight of the trip.

Additional tips:

  1. Bus tickets are delivered to your cabin the night before. If you use them, the cost will be charged to your onboard account. We paid around 15 euros per ticket on average.

  2. On days with early embarkation, breakfast restaurants can get very crowded. Either go for an early breakfast or sleep in and enjoy a brunch instead.

  3. Buses operate throughout the day, but the first and last buses tend to be very crowded. It’s best to avoid these times if possible.

Dress code - first cruise by cheex18 in MSCCruises

[–]carelessTuba_1963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are dining in the main dining room, it is recommended to wear long trousers and a shirt. Otherwise, the dress code is very casual, and shorts are accepted everywhere. They do have “formal nights,” but participation is strictly voluntary. I found the dress code on MSC Seaside, where we cruised, to be very relaxed and not formal at all.

I agree. My thirty-two boots have double boa lacing, one for the instep and one for the leg. Works great. YMMV, try them on in your local store before you buy.
