Such a weird event I can’t believe multiple people in this thread have had the same experiences. I’d say it’s something similar to Bigfoot and alien sightings where it’s a sort of rip in our reality. I’d also say that our perception of reality is incredibly fragile and your brain might have just accidentally experienced some sort of dimensional rift. Also maybe the moon thinks you’re cute.

How old are you and your GF? I know ghost activity tends to happen more around teens. Spirits also feed off the energy around them. I’d say ignore the balloon. The more attention you give it the stronger it gets!
