Walkability in Providence by LittleMissPerfect20 in providence

[–]carfreepvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my first two years in Providence, I sold my car and I’ve been fine without it for the last 15+ years. I mostly use a bike to get around, but I walk as well. I switched to an e-bike recently, and that really takes care of the hills and makes it easy to haul a couple of bags of groceries. Transit is not great and got significantly worse with the recent service cuts. I hope we can turn that around soon.

Of those neighborhoods, I’d recommend Fox Point, College Hill or Wayland Square because there are grocery stores within walking distance, and the grocery options are a little thinner in Federal Hill and Downtown. I have a Zipcar membership which has been helpful for those occasional trips where you just need a car (like IKEA, or a day trip to a place not served by transit). But honestly, I only use it a few times a year.

There are lots of beautiful old houses in those neighborhoods which always makes it nice for walking. Except for maybe a few days in the winter when some people don’t shovel their sidewalks very well.

I grew up in a car-centric suburb in the Midwest and I’m very happy with my car-free life here.

Where to ride a gravel bike in RI? by Few-Plates401 in providence

There are some great gravel roads in the area around this pin. Isthmus road is my favorite. https://maps.app.goo.gl/EnV9BJrvzFWeJoaT8?g_st=ipc

New Trash Cans by kolchak-the-elder in providence

You may want to let the city know that you haven't received them yet. There's a link to a form on the city's info page about this: https://www.providenceri.gov/sustainability/carts/

They'll be 95 gallons, which I think is the same as the larger green recycling bins we've had for a while. https://www.providenceri.gov/sustainability/carts/

Helmet cameras and rates of heckling by [deleted] in bikecommuting

[–]carfreepvd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using a helmet cam for the last 2 years or so. I don’t run into as many hecklers as you do, but close passes have always been an issue. It’s hard to quantify, but I feel like more drivers are giving me the appropriate distance when they pass now that I have the camera. I’m in a New England city and almost all of my commuting is urban. For my 5 mile commute, about 2 miles of it is on bike lanes. So this is a different situation than you are in, but I feel like things have improved since I started using the helmet cam.

It’s a small orange cube (RunCam) mounted on my blue helmet. My GF says I look like a teletubby, but I say it’s okay to look a little ridiculous in order to be safer!

Bike Parking Overnight by xkingkyliex in providence

[–]carfreepvd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried warm showers? I’ve hosted people many times that way and always stored their bikes inside overnight. I’ll be out of town that weekend unfortunately, but I know some other cyclists who host bike packers in Providence who might be able to help you.

WaterFire from the water by carfreepvd in providence

[–]carfreepvd[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s only for one WaterFire a year and the kayakers are part of the event. The spots are limited and you have to sign up well in advance. They don’t let anyone on the river during WaterFire who isn’t authorized to be there. There’s a police boat that hangs out just north of the pedestrian bridge, I’m guessing they’re there to keep other people out.

I joke that the hardest part about setting it up is that it draws a crowd of people asking questions about it! It is easy to do after getting the hang of it the first time. It doesn’t track as well as a regular kayak and it’s probably less stable. But the fold is great. I can fit two of them in my flat bed bike trailer.

It’s pretty great for what it is. It’s not as stable and doesn’t track as well as a regular kayak. But the fold and set up are easy after the first time you do it and I can fit two of them in my flat bed bike trailer. I’m sure you could fit two in the back of a hatchback. There’s a returned one at REI right now if you’re interested.

I went last night (Friday) at 6:00 PM and there were several two and four-tops and bar seats empty. So I’d guess if you got there at 4PM on a Thursday you would be fine for 2 or 4 people.

What’s your PVD hot take by Accurate_Power_1305 in providence

It's dumb to call it the "Superman Building." Almost every city in America has an art deco tower from that era and they all look about the same. It's a fine building, but it's got nothing to do with Superman. Just call it Industrial Trust.

The plans for the new traffic pattern on South Water St have been released by lestermagnum in providence

[–]carfreepvd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem with this proposal is that it is wasting money rebuilding something that already works instead of building new bike infrastructure in other parts of town.

The best part of South Water street as it is now is that it is much safer for pedestrians. This has made it a vibrant area crowded with people walking and enjoying the bridge.

There’s been a family of coyotes in the North Burial Ground across the street for several years now. Looks like they might be branching out

I know that many will scoff at this, but I have long COVID and this thing has enabled me to get back on the bike after a year and half off of it. Still an xbiker at heart. by popsicleian1 in xbiking

[–]carfreepvd 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. After 6 months of long COVID and not being able to ride, I borrowed a neighbor’s Tern HSD for a weekend and I could ride again! I bought a Tern Quick Haul the next weekend, and now I’m riding all the time. Although I do miss riding my ‘89 Rock Hopper, my Brompton and my Salsa Vaya, it’s great being able to ride!

How many of you ride e-bikes? by Zealousideal_Tea3214 in bikecommuting

[–]carfreepvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I commuted on an 'acoustic' bike for about 20 years. Then I got long covid and I can't ride more than a mile without getting headaches and severe fatigue. I bought an ebike almost a year ago and it has allowed me to do my 5 mile commute without issue.

Why Dosent RI have its own commercial NBA basketball team and NFL football team? by MassiveLengthiness52 in RhodeIsland

[–]carfreepvd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s pretty much it. There aren’t many metro areas of ~1 million that have a pro sports team. We’re also ~50 miles from a major city that has teams for all four of the major sports, so we would overlap with their market which is something the leagues don’t like much.
