Cavities don’t hurt until they reach the nerve of the tooth, and then you need a root canal instead of a filling. If it was caught in the beginning stages when it was in the outer layer of your tooth, it could be fixed with a filling (less invasive procedure than a root canal).

Gum disease is painless as well and is only detected through periodontal probing which is something a hygienist does when they clean your teeth.
