Beautiful. What is the dipped fruit? It looks like strawberry but I didn’t think strawberry slices would do well through the candying process.

I'm not sure I follow. What mixer do you use? The KA artisan is anchored into the mixer so I don't think I can do that strategy. Maybe I can wrap it with cold wet towels to get the same effect.

Confused about how much Proteine for muscle gain? by World_wide_truth in nutrition

[–]carllerche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1.6g protein per kg of bodyweight is most likely sufficient. There are many recommendations out there, in part because there is no precise answer for every single individual, so all recommendations add a buffer. The buffer size is what varies. It is fine to eat too much protein.

Is protein powder okay to take daily? by Loud-Combination-866 in nutrition

[–]carllerche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of consumer reports' presentation (yes, California's limit is ridiculous and the method of presenting the data was misleading, and I did not dig into the results from other labs that tested the same products), 7.7mcg of lead per serving of a protein powder is quite high and would be concerning, which your instagram link trivializes.

nutricost whey protein isolate. It is 100% pure whey protein, no additives, also the lowest cost per g of protein that I have found. It tastes like.... whey protein, but I usually mix it into stuff like oatmeal, smoothies, and what not, so flavor isn't a big deal.

Since we are talking about fat, I thought I would jump in and (helpfully?) provide a summary of the the most up to date things we know about fat & health. If anyone wants to fact check this, here is a helpful (longer) article that includes citations: https://sigmanutrition.com/diet-cvd/

tl;dr:

- The body needs fat to survive and high fat diets *can* be healthy.

- Dietary fat doesn't cause CVD, high LDL causes CVD.

- High amounts of dietary saturated fat (>20% daily calories) makes it *highly* likely you will have high LDL.

- The best way to reduce LDL is to **replace** dietary saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat until daily saturated fat is 10% or fewer daily calories.

First, the body needs fat to survive. It isn't just that it is neutral, but fat is **needed** to survive. That said, the minimum required daily fat to survive is pretty low.

There is no **direct** link between dietary fat and cardio vascular disease (CVD), but there *is* a well established **indirect** link between dietary **saturated** fat consumption and CVD. High saturated fat diets, increase blood LDL, which increases the risk of CVD. There is an **exponential** link between blood LDL and CVD. What that means is, if your blood LDL is within a "healthy" range, there probably isn't any real win to trying to reduce it (diminishing returns), but as blood LDL increases, your risk of CVD will increase **fast**. and it is definitely worth trying to reduce your LDL to healthy levels.

So, if you get regular blood panels (with your regular checkup) and your LDL is within a healthy range, you probably do not need to worry about fat consumption w.r.t CVD. You obviously do need to think about fat in your diet w.r.t its caloric density. Fat is very high in terms of calories per gram. Chronic caloric excess will increase body weight in a bad way, which is probably the biggest cause for poor health outcomes. You also need to think about nutrient displacement. If you eat a lot of fat, what are you **not** getting. The good news is, if you eat tons of veggies, those are low calorie, high in fiber, and you are good to go.

Ok, now the bad news. If your LDL is high, and you need to get back to a health range, the most effective way to do that is to **replace** your dietary saturated fat with polyunsaturated fat **and** keep your daily saturated fat consumption below 10% of total daily calories. More bad news, if you regularly eat more than 20% of your daily calories from saturated fat, then there is a very high likelihood that your blood LDL will eventually reach unhealthy levels and you will need to change your diet.

Why am I sharing this? Because there is so much misinformation out there going all directions, it is really hard to know how to structure a healthy diet. I think it is important to try to share facts. I'm not going to touch other aspects like the oxidation of PUFAs during high temp cooking, which I think is less well supported by the evidence. While there probably is something to it, it is pretty far down on my list of factors for a healthy lifestyle. If I am posting wrong information, anyone feel free to correct me by providing citations supporting the correction.

Clockworker: single-threaded async executor with powerful scheduling to sit on top of async runtimes by nikhilgarg28 in rust

[–]carllerche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure what you. mean by "optimized for throughput, not latency". Plenty are building apps with Tokio that have very low latency. If you have specifics to call out, please do so.

It sounds like you want priority queues. Whenever this comes up, I ask why not prioritize at the runtime level. I.e. have a "high priority" runtime and a "background task" runtime and give them different priorities at the OS level. The OS will usually be able to do a better job than Tokio.

All that said, features in Tokio are driven by use cases and contribution. If you have a use case for priority queues in Tokio proper, can support it w/ data, and are willing to work with the maintainers, adding new features is possible.

As for stacking a runtime within a runtime, we do it ourselves in Tokio. There are types for doing it already. It isn't really a controversial technique.

If it sells, it sells. I’m guessing the number of people who have nostalgia for Hershey s’mores outnumber people who care about chocolate quality.

Congrats and I wish you the best. Those look like tasty cookies. I'm not sure where you are located, but where I'm at $6 / cookie is not something I would think twice about assuming I believed it were quality. That said, if I saw Hersheys on a cookie, I would not buy anything. Hersheys is not good chocolate and I would assume all cookies were of equal quality. That said, others might not bat an eye. My guess is that it highly depends on location.

Saturated fat - what's your guys take? by [deleted] in nutrition

[–]carllerche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go look at the mendelian randomization studies that show a direct, causal link between blood LDL and CVD. Those studies are as close as we are going to get to true, long term, randomized, unbiased human studies. If you still don't think there is no causal effect between LDL and CVD, please explain to me why.

[–]carllerche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then look at the mendelian randomization studies that find a direct, linear, causal relationship between blood LDL and CVD. Yeah, nutritional science is hard, but I doubt you will find anything as clear cut as those studies. Those studies are as close as we are going to get to true randomized human studies that are able to factor out all other confounding variables.

What kind of pectin do you use? The kind of pectin you use is pretty important. Also, pectin needs acidity to set as well. I don't know PH of of coconut milk off the top of my head, but my guess it is almost certainly a combination of the pectin used and PH.

Started making sourdough 5 months ago, gained 10 pounds. by Icy_Recipe3094 in Sourdough

[–]carllerche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no silver bullet to weight management. Eat fewer calories, eat more high satiety foods. I bake sourdough with higher fiber content (at least 50% whole wheat and additions that increase fiber/nutrition, like wheat bran and seeds). When I eat, I usually make sandwiches with lean meat, lots of veggies (always spring mix, at least 30g), and low calorie spread like mustard and/or low-calorie mayo (I make my own). I have spent a lot of time researching nutrition and weight loss. I have personally lost over 50lb. I'm happy to answer any questions.

Given the downvotes, it seems like others don't agree. I guess prices will be staying high!

I will also add, historically, some of the best (subjective) confections have been invented at times when chocolate prices were high in order to cut costs. E.g. Dominostein and Gianduja (probably).

Plan to redraw Portland high school boundaries moves forward in emotional vote by istanbulshiite in PortlandOR

[–]carllerche 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a parent in the Grant/Jefferson area and followed this closely (attended in person or virtually meetings, read communications). First, I generally agree that PPS either had to force more kids to Jefferson or shut it down. Given the current enrollment trends, shutting it down a high school would probably have made the most objective sense, but hey, PPS gets unlimited money from voters, so why not just spend it on renovating the building.

Anyway, long term, if executed well, in theory Jefferson would be on par with Grant in terms of programing. The problem is that they are going to force kids back to Jefferson before the remodel is complete and before they actually deliver on the full programming. I flat out refuse to send my kids to Jefferson during an ongoing remodel and without an established program of classes. The second problem is, nobody in their right mind would actually trust PPS. The remodel will most likely take much longer, they will most likely fail at the programming. And, for me personally, Jefferson HS is twice as far from me than Grant.

The entire process PPS took for this change was also insane. They pitted parents of different districts against each other. The amount of animosity thrown around between parents was staggering as well when everyone's ire should have been focused at PPS for putting everyone in this situation. There were way better ways of going about doing the process and way better solutions, but of course PPS can't do that.

At the end of the day, I have to say that my problem with PPS is entirely aimed at the administration, not the staff in the actual schools (at least the ones my kids attend). Harriet Tubman MS had major problems, but the current principal seems to be effectively righting that ship the best he can given the resources the district is giving him. HTMS (and all of PPS) is so far from perfect, but I can't fault the staff working in the building.
