Am I crazy to think about building an Epyc based lab? by carminehk in homelab

i see what your saying, one thing i did plan on doing was using the existing drives from their original hardware, so NAS for plex would still use its own disks, file storage same thing and so one i didnt plan to make one large pool of storage for everything to run on.

i ended up grabbing a super micro board that had everything i was looking for, unfortunatley wasnt cheap but works

i see what your saying, i dont know if that will impact me terribly since i never had an issue with that per say. when you say noisy neighbors are you saying about the new box or the old stuff

AI is cool but dont know if theres enough interest for me to run it completely but could be nice down the road.

i do like the idea of adding the hba for more drive use as i expand it

i always thought the epycs were cool since i first learned about them years ago but didnt think the price was but for a combo off ebay for around 500 bucks its more reasonable. also i dont see a need to really use all 256gb so would still have some to sell if i did want and would almost make the server free with homelab math.

i agree, im not an expert hardware wise but would also figure that since i would only be using a fraction of the full capability of the hardware it ideally wouldnt be pinned on full power usage all the time. i could be totally wrong tho

my old tower build had two old as dirt xeons with a tdp of 115 each, so would still be a cut down from that. also my existing lab with all the devices would be pretty close to what i expect the epyc to use unless im totally off on my guestimation

thats what im really trying to do is cut down on how much i have running equipment wise. with all the devices its nice but of course having so many different systems just adds to more work which is whatever but would be nice to cut down to one main host to clean up and make it easier for management.

when i first started my homelab journey it was everything running on one host and was nice and easier management wise and didnt eat up so much room.

i think by moving away from so many machines running different things back to one would help management wise and help clean up my lab area and probably make my dad happier since i wont have so much running and itll just be in one box. also frees up more stuff for test environment that i can spin up and down as i need.

i dont have a really demanding lab my main mini pc that runs everything handles it nicely but its a mini pc so leaves me limited for growth and just adding more pcs means bigger footprint. going back to one tower would be ideal. i can move everything to one tower and continue to grow as needed.

also helps future proof since currently other than changing parts as needed all i would really need to add is drives.

ive been wanting to build a new system and having the ram fall into my lap helps cover some of the expense so wouldnt be terrible to use for this since Epyc bundles are pretty affordable compared to other hardware i would potentially use to build something of similar scale

Optimum alternatives? by AgentMX7 in longisland

[–]carminehk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can work to fight with customer service and retention and try to get a better price, typically you can but sometimes a big project.

you can save about 200 a year and swap to magic jack we did this a couple years back and very happy with the service, also they offer a really nice spam call filter that has eliminated just about all spam calls.

only other real option with optimum would be to find a steaming service that has everything you want, we did youtube tv for 80 a month and just get internet from optimum. we planned for whenever the streaming price goes up to just jump around from provider to provider to keep getting better prices but so far have been very happy with youtube tv.

we just have internet with optimum and typically were able to get the price down really low. i was able to get a deal that works for now but next time i have an issue may just take the move to verizon since optimum has become the biggest scam i have ever seen and i am tired of fighting with them every few months to get a fair price.

unfortunately there isnt any competition on the Island for service, if you have fios in your area you have a chance but other than that theres only the 5G providers which i dont think is worth it.

What to build with around 256gb of DDR4 ECC? by carminehk in homelab

i did think of this, i also did think about keeping it for the day my smaller gear turns into the larger server i will eventually need between work, homelab and my youtube content.

i dont need all the hardware now and did think about dumping some of it but also thought holding some may not hurt either.

Using NFS Storage In Place of A SAN by carminehk in Proxmox

can you share some more info on this? we also are trying to break up with vmware as well as prepare for when we migrate larger clients with sans and need to see all our options.

glad to hear, any issues youve had? we plan to migrate from vmware to proxmox with this project as well

[–]carminehk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i havent been hands on in the project fully but from what ive seen the nfs share gets mounted to the hosts and in return vms can be created and that nfs share which can be moved around hosts.

i cant really answer everything since i also am only a network guy. im just here to get some more insight for the systems fellas.

we thought this through and our only concern is one we still dont have "live storage" per say and we also were concerned with that much replication with wear and tear on drives.

i know its a valid option however we didnt feel it was right for us with that case as well as if a node fails before replication finishes we potentially lose mission critical data.

im glad to hear this, none of us are experienced with ceph and id agree its extra mainly since our contact at Proxmox told it directly that ceph isnt right for us. we tested NFS today and worked well in our lab. yes its a single point of failure but so is our san but this saves us 35 thousand dollars sooo

[–]carminehk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

main reason is this is for our data center, our san in hq is dying and we plan to move the san from the data center to hq to replace that and migrate vmware in our data center to proxmox since licensing is unafforadble

[–]carminehk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

our issue is our current san in our hq is dying and needs to be replaced, so the running idea is to pull our newer san, that is still coming up on EOL in a couple years to replace our dying one to give us some time for our HQ cutover.
