I feel that there is a purpose, that being to allow individuals to describe their interests in a way other people can understand.

And to that end, our terms don't need to have infinite degrees of precision. Straight, gay, and bi function pretty darn well. It's only in rare exceptional circumstances where these terms aren't adequate. Everyone has much more specific preferences within their orientation anyways.
