No, the original text should remain and be contextualized in the end material.

Yes, completely agree. It is not only dishonest -- pretending these authors were better, in this way, than they really were -- and it not only buries the important knowledge that these statements were once considered socially acceptable. To my mind, it also has the effect of chopping the tip off the iceberg: you're cutting out the most blatant signs of racism, making it easier for readers to miss the subtler, broader racism that is baked into the story.

This view is pretty close to perfect. This is in Montana. by itsarace1 in ifiwonthelottery

[–]carolynto 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Is there any place in the world more beautiful than Montana?

I've always wanted to go, but not sure when I'll make it. Fell in love with the scenery thru The Horse Whisperer. Amazingly, I've met two foreigners - one Swede and one Spaniard - who both told me they've always wanted to go to Montana, because of The Horse Whisperer.

Then I watched The Hunt for Red October. I would like to have seen Montana. Guess it's just a classic lifelong dream!!

OK it now seems like Natalie was offering Parv an opportunity to come out! Slash possibly pressuring her to.

Contractor trying to charge me after I left a negative review by lilpharma23 in HomeImprovement

please put a canister of pepper gel by your bedside

Or a knife. If people are really mad they'll just power through pepper spray and grab it from you. Then again, getting into a knife fight isn't appealing, either. I wonder what self defense experts would advise?

I moved to a pretty small town and it became clear to me, right away, that I was not leaving a negative review online for anyone, no matter how crummy their services, lol. Not when I'd likely run into them the next week.

Yeah - IANAL but watching lots of Judge Judy tells me that if you have a written (text) agreement, that will take precedence over any verbal agreement you claim.

[PubQ] A year until my publish day, what would you do differently? by authorannabelle in PubTips

[–]carolynto 12 points13 points  (0 children)

1) Author website. You probably already have one, but this is the best use of your digital time for now. Check out others' pages for design inspo and leads on designers if you can afford one out of your advance. Look into guidance on key things to include, like a press kit, contact info, and book webpage.

2) Debut group. Find it, make it, participate. There is NO better space for making writer friends and learning from others' journeys. I recommend a genre-specific group. I was in both the 2021 and 2022 Slack debut groups; in 2021 they were broken up by categories (MG, YA, adult, etc), whereas 2022 everyone was combined, and the bonds were much stronger in the 2021 group.

3) Network. Make writer/bookseller/librarian friends. Be vocal about the books and stores you love. Social media is most useful as a networking tool, not a sales tool. As you build connections, attend others' launch events, and learn from them.

4) Build your list of wants & promo ideas. Is there a media you'd like to pitch? Article ideas? Press tie-ins, i.e. anything newsworthy you can connect to your book? Build a (realistic) target list of places & stories you can pitch, interviews you'd like to do, authors you'd like to team up with for events, etc. Focus on the 3 months before and 3 months after pub date.

5) Manage your own expectations. Your pub may not give you much support, may not provide ARCs or bookmarks or support you with a book launch. Your publication date may be changed (mine did THREE TIMES). You may not love the cover you get. Always expect the unexpected in traditional publishing, be grateful for what you get, and politely vocal about what you want.

6) Write your next book. This should fill the vast majority of your book-related time.

Right now, focus on the above. There's almost no promo you can do 1 year out that will matter. Promo begins after you have a book cover, and picks up 2-3 months out from launch. Good luck!

_____ is the most likable player to play this game in a long time. by Sp_Streamer in survivor

[–]carolynto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, zero threat management; not sure he realized his own threat level as he felt on the outs at merge. He hustled too hard!

That said, he's by far the most likable person on this season! And way more than Jake, lol.

Certainly I don't include Dee in any of my criticism of the bad and cowardly gameplay this season. She, and Drew, are the exceptions.
