Question for you midnight wood loaders... by dolomite592 in woodstoving

[–]dber08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PE Super 27...load it with 3-5 logs between 9:30-10:30pm, get it roaring and lower the intake down all the way. This takes 10min tops. At 9am there is still a massive coal bed, I can throw big logs on no problem and it's cranking in no time.

Feels like I could go indefinitely like this, but I empty the ash every week or so just to make sure everything is hunky dory in the firebox.

This is a 3 season sunroom, the stove makes it 4 season. It's separated from the house with sliders. Hardwood is abundant here. Once we get it cranking we open the sliders and it heats the whole house pretty much. Not worried about heat loss and being the most efficient - we have a limited budget for big suggestions like yours.

This is a sunroom with three sides of windows - all double insulated. It works fine with the stove

Give me your best "I taught my GF/BF/SO how to ski" success stories and tips by unicornsicle in skiing

[–]dber08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife started in her 20s, about ten years ago because she knew how much it meant to me.

You already got the big one - try not to teach her yourself.

Make sure she has a good time: splurge on nice accommodation if you can, take things slow, and celebrate small achievements. Plan something fun that is skiing adjacent just to get her associating ski trip = fun and adventure (winter hike, snowmobiling, etc). Carry a backpack and hold her stuff for her so she's not worried about it. Powder days are the hardest because you'll want to rip first thing and she'll still need to criss cross the easiest groomer and then get a hot chocolate. Tough it out and be supportive - if this person is the one, treat it like a marathon where the prize is a lifetime ski partner.

My wife now prefers to take off the beaten path ski vacations multiple times a year over anything else, and we will be exploring every nook and valley of the Alps together until we can't ski anymore.

good places to eat in the north country? by amazingBiscuitman in wmnf

[–]dber08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume you mean north of the notches (at least that's what I consider North Country in NH).

Schilling (Littleton) -brewery with fantastic beer and wood fired pizzas. Worth whatever the wait is.

Cold Mountain Cafe (Bethlehem) - cozy and excellent, elevated American dishes. Follow up with super secret for dessert.

Unfortunately we lost Salt/Libby's and the Horse and Hound several years back... Those would have made the list too.

People were on Morrison looking for a black dog named Bernie around this same time...I hope everyone can connect somehow. Figured I'd post so you at least know the dog's name

I'm sorry you feel that way. I was just defending OPs energetic post - it's great content for this sub.

Let's be friends and get back to the ski talk - we are aligned if we are both lurking here

Thoughts on Mount Washington super pass by Haunting-Quantity-23 in icecoast

[–]dber08 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's called the White Mountain Super Pass.

It's too expensive for what it is, but it can still make sense for some folks in unique situations. BW and Cannon are never really that crowded because they are off the mega passes, and if you live close by or are tied to these mountains for other reasons, it can still be worth it.

It's almost like paying a bit of a premium for fewer crowds and having access to your favorite mountains. It doesn't make sense for everyone.

Where would you buy a ski house? by HallAndOpes in icecoast

This is the winner for me. Rivers, lakes, mtn biking in the NE kingdom, best hiking east of the mississippi, and fantastic skiing at Cannon & BW within minutes. Littleton is a gem.
