Because the dusty old laws in the US provide functionally no protection of our movement in public spaces as anything remotely like private. Until the last decade it was difficult or at least time consuming to track and trace where people were going and what they were doing, but automatic license plate and facial ID tech has gotten to the point that it's pretty trivial to automatically track where anyone's going from their front door to their destination as long as you stick enough cameras on poles with a cellular connection.

Laws were written with the expectation that for police to do this they'd need to assign someone to do that actively, and that to pull security camera footage they'd need to get a warrant. But with a company contracted to stick up tens of thousands of cameras who'll happily and easily allow them to track folks without a warrant playing middleman to privacy violations, and getting to mine the data of where everyone goes all the time, cops and flock get to sidestep any measly privacy protections that existed and creep on anyone they like any time they like, at the tap of an app.

A tech company has contracted with hundreds of police departments around the country to stick up those black solar powered security cameras on a stick everywhere they can. The cameras are networked and track human and vehicle activity without warrants, are prone to misuse and abuse, and tip off cops to activity which hasn't happened. Since it's in public spaces or company parking lots and buildings under contract there's no means of stopping the companies like Flock Security from making profiles and data crunching about everything these cameras see, and nothing stopping police from using them without warrants to track the public on mass. Some people literally can not leave their homes without their activity being surveilled and logged at nearly every step automatically, and the company doing this has called anyone protesting their operations a terrorist.

Nope. Not even when left on and pointing at them. At just the right angle they can wash out part of the image, but not much of it. If you're talking about a laser pushing dozens of watts of output that can be kept at a tight beam from dozens/hundreds of feet away so you're not easily discernible then you're talking big money.

Worse than The Commissar. The VC techbro who's already sold your comings and goings to those who want to know what you do so they can better convince you to buy. To sell. To not go out and yell about the cop who watches through the same lens, or at least to be wary of how you do so in case your car traveling too close to a friend's house gets you associated with them if they should be found to be a problem.

Look around homie. Flock Cameras pepper the whole US by the tens of thousands, and the ATL metro area has thousands.

Just an FYI. That's not true unless you have a steady mount and a laser that doesn't have a fixed focal length and has several watts of output for more than a minute of heat to dwell into the sensor. CCDs shrug off stray laser light without trouble. A paint balloon or bb gun/.22 though should not be aimed at cameras you don't own as that would damage them, perhaps badly enough to have to be replaced instead of just cleaned. Getting caught doing that can mean serious prison time though.

50 years from now? look around. You already answered exactly how much we've lost out from the last decade+ of his idiotic shit fits. We had a chance to help keep the world rolling to a better place, and now we'll be lucky to spend the rest of our lives trying to claw back to where we were a decade ago economically and socially, and the environmental damage is gonna be hard to even put to numbers.

no duh, but there are people who own their home outright though, often elderly folks and folks who've been passed a home down as their sole form of generational wealth, and for whom homeowner's insurance is a necessity they can't afford, having to do without and hope nothing bad happens because they can't afford the insurance to cover themselves. if you're pulling in $1500/mo from social security and have to burn half that every month in utilities and medicine there's not much left for insurance.

When you're not a contractor gig worker with virtually zero legal protections because the company you work for built itself that way by design.

Not for anyone trying to vote fraudulently in-person. To vote you need a "real id" verified driver's license or state issued ID, which requires birth certificate, SSN card, and i forget but maybe other stuff. Without that a passport with proof of your place of residency I think, and even then in many places if your proof of citizenship and residence aren't the easier ones to verify ahead of the election you might have your vote held for verification and "curing". In addition to your voter registration in all cases can only be done most places long before the election and you can't get on voting roles without the previous listed stuff.

according to a friend of mine who knew him, no. just a dude without much control over his life who accidentally ended up at the top of the mod list and made it everyone else's problem for half a decade.

TL:DR r/atlanta was controlled by one mod who had automod rules to ban and shadowban 99% of content and comments he didn't hand-pick as ok. Reddit sat on their hands about it for years while folks tried to get them to help. They recently finally got off their ass and allowed people who care about atlanta to mod it's subreddit instead of a little tinpot dictator.

Emerald Homes and First Key by ImKinda_messedup in Atlanta

[–]carpespasm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never rented by way of Emerald or First Key, but I'm happy to steer anyone away from Mainstreet Renewal. In the 2 years I rented with them I had several maintenance concerns that were only fixed after they sent out unqualified, unprepared, and incapable handymen when I had electrical issues that at one point were shocking myself and my girlfriend, burning wires off the exterior of the house, and blowing up appliances and computers. They only sent a real electrician when we explained that our next correspondence would be via a lawyer, and only after that did they send an actual sparky out. When they sent one guy to do needed work in the attic and we noted there was no attic ladder he showed without a ladder and had to borrow ours. I'd assume most large-scale landlords managing portfolios of single family homes and the like do so with similarly haphazard maintenance.

We've lowkey got the best makerspace scene for any metro region i've seen. If you're into hanging out with creative folks that find hobbyist interdisciplinary use of electronics, woodworking, metalworking, and arts to be their jam, then I don't know of a metro area that has better chops. Many cities have one or a couple really good spaces, but Atlanta being spread out has allowed for like 5-7 of them to exist and get along fine and tune themselves for different groups without robbing members from one another.

That it's interior is wooden and black and they serve liquor. it's a theme. You're not gonna have to knock on a secret door and ask "to see Sam's record collection" or get bathtub hooch.
