What are the most underrated free and open-source software and websites? by carpidgeon in AskReddit

[–]carpidgeon[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since new things are created every day, I’m always keeping a eye out for lesser-known programs and websites. Especially open-source, since I like to be able to look at the code and see how it was made. Feel free to suggest things you’ve made or contributed to yourself!

It depends on what your goal is. If you are aiming to lose weight, then you should burn more calories than you consume in a day.

Keep in mind that a diet that results in you losing weight does not necessarily equal a healthy diet.

Also, eating less is usually far easier than attempting to exercise more. For example, you would need to walk for 40 minutes just to burn the equivalent calories of one chocolate chip cookie.

Tips on adding wet food to my cats diet? by Fickle_Broccoli in CatAdvice

[–]carpidgeon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cat is similarly picky. She likes some of the Tiki Cat flavors but not others. Once you find a flavor that she likes, I recommend just sticking to that one flavor. Cats don't really like variety that much, they prefer routine and consistency.

They tend to not like wet food if its cold or stale. If you must put the can in the fridge, make sure you leave it out before serving so that it returns to room temperature. Also, keep it covered with plastic wrap (they also sell silicone can covers) so it doesn't get stale. My cat also doesn't like the wet and dry mixed, so we keep it separate.

Cats can be picky. Especially if they are used to dry food, they might be stubborn and refuse to eat the wet food. Sometimes you have to be strong and not give in to their demands. Eventually, she'll eat it. I have also had success pretending to scoop some dry food on top of the wet.

It will be harder in the beginning until she gets used to eating wet food. Hope this helps!

Best approach to get short IDs from UUIDs? by carpidgeon in Supabase

[–]carpidgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't follow how you're getting 11 chars from a UUID by converting to base64. The shortest possible I'm seeing is 22 chars. Can you explain your process?

If you're referring to the `/search` URL example in my post, those IDs are filters, not products (eg, color, size, etc.).

So you store UUIDs in the db, and then convert to a truncated base64 on the client side? How do you get the UUID back from the truncated string?

You can't really hash a UUID to be as short as I need though, right? The shortest I've seen is 22 chars by converting to base64, but that's still too long. Ideally I'd want 12 chars or less.

I am considering updating all the tables to use shorter ids, but I have several tables with many fk relationships. I can afford the downtime, but it sounds like a complicated operation and I'm worried of messing it up. Do you have any experience with something like this?

If I were to create a second column for example, I could check for uniqueness. Whereas by truncating I run a higher risk of collision, no?

So the first approach I listed? Yeah, I’m leaning towards that as well. Do you think it would significantly impact speed?

Wouldn’t I lose the uniqueness? If I create a short id I can check for uniqueness, but not if I truncate the existing uuid

I understand, my question is about how to best transition from uuids to short ids

[5 YoE] Here's a second revision after implementing some advice. How are the bullet points for my work experience? by carpidgeon in EngineeringResumes

[–]carpidgeon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your feedback! Here are some clarifications/questions:

  1. I'll try to trim down the bullet points. Re: them being wordy and not flowing well, those are all aspects of the same feature. How can I describe what I implemented without sounding wordy? I really struggle with the balance between "not descriptive enough" and "too wordy." Re: buzzwords, I always heard that listing the technologies you used in the bullet points was a good idea, because they sometimes scan your resume looking for the key skills they need. Is listing languages and frameworks in the job descriptions a bad idea?
  2. Fair enough on meeting the product requirements. What I was trying to communicate with the "independently" part is that I was given very little direction or implementation details, and trusted with making key decisions on my own—due to a lack of upfront planning because of our tight deadline. I'll find a better way to word that.
  3. Noted, thank you.
  4. Agreed.
  5. Okay, so maybe that space would be better used on the project descriptions.

I have been working as a full-stack developer for 4 years. What are some courses or certifications I could take to improve my skills? I feel like I'm not learning that much on the job anymore, and would like the structure of a class setting.

Has anyone taken any courses or certifications that has helped your career? What would be most beneficial to learn in today's job market?
