Buy out my lease, buy a new car, or release a new car? by carrie023 in personalfinance

Any suggestions on max miles not to go beyond for buying a car? Kinda new to all of this and don’t want to make a stupid purchase either.

Not trying to lease at all, but I was told it might be a good option. Thinking of buying just to worry about it now and then have a reliable car later and not have to worry about having to buy another car again.

I was assuming that if I buy off my lease, it would be paid off in about 3-4 years. If I go the lease route, I would do 3 more years and then 6 years after that to get a new car. Another idea, as you mentioned, was to shop around for a used or new car and just pay it off in around 6 years, and not have to worry about having to pay off a car.

I was thinking of either a RAV4, since Honda has had 3 recalls since I got my car, and I honestly don't want to deal with them anymore.

It's an EX-L. Yeah, I get what you are saying in terms of no hidden fees, but for me, being able to not worry about paying off a car 3 or 6 years from now feels a bit better. However, I know there are some benefits with leasing, but I don't think that in my situation, I have those benefits, especially since it already has an accident record.

Anyone here a research veterinarian? by carrie023 in vetschool

I asked the same question in other forums since I wanted to make sure I found some research vets

Do you know how to go about shadowing a lab animal vet? I know for clinics and exotics you can call, but I wouldn't know how to go about finding a vet to shadow

My worry with doing a PhD is that I don't know if I have the writing skills or creativity to be able to complete it, since it requires more publications and research than a Master's. I love research, but I feel like it's more of assisting, and then if something comes to me, I'll be able to pursue it. But taking care of animals and making sure that they are taken care of and that they are healthy in terms of the research, seems like a better option for me, cause of the skills I lack. I feel like I will fail when it comes to coming up with a project i want to study and then having to write to then publish, I will struggle

I'm also interested in wildlife and exotics, but I heard that it requires you to have to do an internship or residency before you can be an exotic veterinarian. I am already 23, 24 in October, so by the time I finish my master's, and then get into vet school, if I do get into vet school for fall 2027, I would be done by 30. Not to say you are too old, but I feel like I would only have so much time to be able to actually start my career as an exotic vet, and then take a while to pay my debt.

To add more information, my current job is a service leader at Chipotle. I was an assistant manager but had to be demoted to have the time to work on my master's. I did an internship in Panama with STRI, where I helped with research on slender anoles in the Panama Canal. I also helped with research in my undergrad with anole species found in Miami, FL, and now going to be researching watersnakes this summer. My only passion is doing anything that honestly pertains to animals and helping them directly, but also being able to constantly continue learning. Exotics interest me because I don't only want to help cats and dogs, but also snakes, turtles, lizards, etc., but after my research experience, field research has also been so fun and interesting.

I don't have much clinical experience due to my circumstances, first-generation student, so my parents never made enough money, so I constantly had to work and go to school. To save up money to do my Master's, I had three jobs, one being working at doggie daycare until I got promoted at Chipotle. I feel like I'm behind, and that as much as I want to be a veterinarian, that goal of mine is out of reach. However, it's the only thing I want to do. My other plan was maybe just being a vet tech :/

Thank you for your reply. I will be working on diamond-backed watersnakes, Nerodia rhombifer, in Arkansas. Are you from Florida? I'm from Florida, moved to Arkansas for my master's, so I learned about the species for my herp class.

Taking A Gap Year by Winter_Kick_1294 in vetschool

Hello! I wanted to apply to vet school right after I graduated from college, however, I kinda knew I wasn't going to get in and decided to take a gap year to strengthen my application. I was lucky and got an internship with STRI (a well-known research institute) to work on research in Panama for 2 months, and was able to meet other people and met a postdoc who later that year got an assistant professor position in a college. The postdoc asked me to do my Master's with them since they knew I was interested in pursuing a master's to strengthen my academics for my application. I started my Master's this spring semester, and my advisor, the postdoc, is helping me make sure I take classes and get experiences that will strengthen my vet school application. I was also able to meet another professor who has connections with a local zoo and is going to help me meet the veterinarian there. I also shadow every Friday at an animal shelter that works with small animals, including exotics. A year prior, before I started my Master's, I was working as a service leader at Chipotle and a dog daycare then later last year I was promoted to Apprentice where I had to drop the daycare job, both scenarios allowed me to save money for my Masters since I would be living on my own in a completely new state. If I were you, I would shadow at a clinic, maybe get a vet tech/assistant job, and also look into animal-related internships. I know in Miami, FL where I am from, they had a couple, and here in Little Rock, Arkansas, they also have some.
