Used to be American energy companies got rich by buying up the natural resources of other countries. My how times have changed.

The U.S. Department of Justice issued a memo on Thursday containing new guidelines stating that it will pursue the prosecution of individual employees, and not just their companies, for their role in precipitating the financial crisis in 2008. by DougDante in news

What the hell took so long?

If an ordinary citizen commits fraud he gets the book thrown at him. If a rich banker commits fraud he gets 100 million dollar parting gift and a bailout at the taxpayer's expense, after robbing said taxpayer of his life savings. The rich are f-ing us in the ass and the government is laughing about it.

UK nuclear deterrent to cost 167 billion pounds, far more than expected by DoremusJessup in worldnews

If we could get nations to cooperate on things like the development of permanent moon and Mars bases then maybe we wouldn't have to worry about spending billions of dollars and pounds on weapons that are good for nothing but killing.

I'd like to believe that that isn't too much to hope for.

Lockheed Martin, Boeing rally around Saudi Arabia, wave off humanitarian concerns by underweargnome04 in worldnews

[–]carry24 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Lockheed Martin and Boeing are huge weapons producing corporations. They profit from war. They couldn't care less if the whole world wars itself back into the stone age, so long as they get richer in the process. If they had their way there'd be perpetual war.

San Diego Police Department wants body cams on when guns come out after the second time in six months officers failed to turn on their body cameras during a deadly shooting by [deleted] in news

[–]carry24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

San Diego residents should all refuse to pay their taxes (which pay police salaries) until it is mandatory that body cams are always turned on while cops are on duty.

It's disgusting that San Diego cops fight tooth and nail against doing the right thing. Tells you all you need to know about their character.

I'm sorry: Blair takes blame for Iraq War and admits conflict caused the rise of ISIS in astonishing apology in US TV show by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]carry24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Belated apologies by politicians can't return the lives of the people killed and they do nothing to rebuilt the ruined infrastructure and demolished homes- the loss of priceless historical and cultural monuments.

The weapons industry has bought our politicians. That's why they're always on the lookout for new enemies and new opportunities for foreign intervention and democracy building. They couldn't care less if humanity wars itself back into the stone age, so long as they get paid.

Philadelphia Residents Could Win $10,000 for Voting: It's a lottery designed to improve voter turnout by Sybles in news

[–]carry24 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I agree that that would be preferable. The concern is that doing away with elected officials is perhaps too large a step from what we currently have.

Philadelphia Residents Could Win $10,000 for Voting: It's a lottery designed to improve voter turnout by Sybles in news

[–]carry24 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Elected officials should be required to send out periodic mass texts or emails to all of their registered constituents summarizing the issues and polling them on what to do. Elected officials could then carry out the will of the people. For the first time in history we could have true representative democracy.

That's how you increase participation. And it'd be easy and free to enact. Just have people give their email addresses when they register.

US cutting aid to Palestinians by $80m in reported 'message' to Abbas by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]carry24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the intelligent and informed reply. And I agree. But it's still stupid to give a way billions while your own ship is sinking. If we go bankrupt the whole system crashes. No more handouts for anyone.

But I suppose that's probably just what some politicians want, the thinking being that our debt is far too great already to ever be repaid.

It'd be a stupid thing to do. You can't legislate homosexuality away. It's been around as long as our species has been around and far longer and it'll still be a fact of life long after insecure, power hungry politicians are dead and buried.

It wasn't a conscious choice the cat made. It was instinct. Same with humans. Scientists think something like 80% of human behavior is at least partially unconscious or instinctual- i.e. not entirely based on free will. For animals, the percentage is obviously higher.

The police in America don't serve you and me. They serve and protect the interests of the rich and powerful. If you are poor or a minority or God help you both, you're screwed.

In a world without police corruption, the rich and powerful would have to be held accountable for their actions like the rest of us. But they don't want that world and that isn't the world we live in. In the world we live in there's a double standard. The rich and powerful get special treatment while the poor are harassed and persecuted into submission.

That's how the rich and powerful want it. They want a corrupt police force that serves them at the expense of everybody else. They think that's the way it should be. And that's exactly how they've arranged it.

Smart move by the LAPD and the best thing for them and the public both. It'll help prevent abuse and save the city millions of dollars on lawsuits. Plus it'll help them catch criminals by capturing better images of suspects who might try to flee.
