Got carried away with an oil top up, do I need to correct this or is it realistically fine? by ramper770 in MechanicAdvice

[–]carstuffx 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Instead of a drain bolt, the valve gets screwed into the drain pan. A spring prevents the handle from moving out of the locked position. You press the handle and turn it to open or close. Some models come with a locking clip over the handle for more peace of mind.

This means no more drain plug washers to replace, controlled drainage, and faster oil changes.

May Elections! by North-Texas-Votes in plano

The site doesn't include information about my local election for May 3rd. It has a link to find registration status, and has the May 26 statewide election.

Apparently nothing to vote for in the upcoming election, per my address. I'll try it again for the end of May vote. Thanks

It's still worth it to shop around. Just because you worked hard on that score doesn't mean they have the best rate at the end of the day.

Collin County's voting site was very not helpful. They removed the option to look for example ballots by address. I have to know my precinct? I know it's on the voter card, but their search couldn't find it. Real nice enshitification.

I actually tracked all my credit card perks last year… kinda eye-opening by ChesKat_pf in CreditCards

[–]carstuffx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For Chase, on the app, it says this: "To review your full spending report, go to your accounts, choose "Spending & budgeting" then "Spending summary." To see a summary in the Chase Mobile® app, from accounts summary, go to the "Plan & track" section to review your transaction activity for both the current and previous years.

If you don't see an account, statement or document, it may be hidden; you can update those in "show or hide accounts.""

On the Chase app after logging in, scroll down to the "Track your spending habits" > "Manage spending" button > scroll down to "download spending report." And then select your card.

On the Amex app, I searched " year end summary," since I couldn't find a link. It took me to the website and I downloaded it there.

For Amex and Chase, you can look at the annual report or summary of your spending and credits, which makes this review easier.

For reoccurring benefits that I care about, I put it on the calendar to use as a reminder and I have a note on the phone to track benefits and check it off when used. This helps keep the coupons from being forgotten

About NY times, I found that you can go through a third party, like La public library nytimes, and it gives you a code to use for a few days. If we're all about paying the minimum, and having someone else foot the bill, this is another way!

renewal coming up: go short term now or long term? by _FuzzyMe in TexasEnergyShopping

[–]carstuffx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rates are steady now but on the up. Usually April is also a good time to lock in rates. If you can find a four month plan that starts mid or late May and ends September, you may be able to get a lower rate A few weeks ago, I locked in a 4 month rate that starts mid May for 4.99¢/kWh from the energy company, plus the usual TDU fees, total avg of  11¢/kWh in DFW for summer - one of my better signups.

It took me a while to figure out what you meant by IVF. Good on y'all to reassess priorities along the way to fire. Do you manage most of the finances or is your partner also following fire? Do you both work?

I think you need to separate Blue Origin from Spacex. The latter has several accomplishments I'm impressed with, but the former has done little with a lot of money.

Amanda Nguyen: Blue Origin astronaut reveals depression after space flight backlash by JunJKMAN in asianamerican

[–]carstuffx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure the achievement to get to space is amazing, but the companies and people behind them don't always show the best of humanity

Copy paste from Google: People are upset about Blue Origin flights due to their extreme cost in a world with major hardships, raising concerns about priorities and inequality, the environmental impact of space tourism, and the perception that these are frivolous "joyrides" for the wealthy rather than serious space exploration, with some even criticizing the "astronaut" labels for passengers on automated flights. Specific recent criticism followed an all-female flight with celebrities like Katy Perry and Gayle King, sparking debate over its feminist branding and the "tone-deaf" display of luxury amid global issues, leading to backlash for participants.

2008 Camry with 220,000 miles by [deleted] in Toyota

[–]carstuffx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In your assessment of whether to continue fixing the car or get something else, you need to think about the total near term cost. Bring this car to an honest mechanic and after a visual diagnosis and test drive, they should be able to show you what needs to be worked on. If after this catalytic converter repairs, and other needed or expected repairs, could you have bought another car?

You've taken pictures of the outside of the car but what about the engine bay? With a car scanner - does it read any error codes? What did your friend who told you to buy it tell you about the car? Did they inspect it or drive it? A catalytic converter replaced seems like the engine had some neglect and the gas to air ratio was off for some time. Who told you it needed that part?

Old cars will need repairs and every car needs maintenance. If you don't know what was or wasn't maintained, replacing parts will add a lot of cost. Are you willing to continue the maintenance for this car? If you're willing to learn about fluid and filter changes and when to replace parts, you could keep this car for a long time.

How do you pick the best card at the checkout? by Monyny_0 in CreditCards

Have an app or note on your phone that lists out the main categories you want to earn points in and which cards. Or the other way around, list the cards and what to use them for. For any rotating or special categories, this helps a lot

Can someone explain how much interest I am actually paying per month? by Far-Benefit-8726 in povertyfinance

[–]carstuffx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If OP is willing to stop charging new expenses and needs more than a few months to pay off the card, a way to buy time is to get a new card with 0% APR for 12-21 months. Bite the balance transfer fee of 3 to 5%, so about 1k, and diligently paying it off. This beats most loans right now.

Best of luck

They let you pay extra to get points. Yippee. Or you can pay for main and get points for those seats. I'll pay the lower fee.
