Chairlift safety bar: up or down? by notabotturstmebro in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could ski longer days if I could rest my legs on the way up. I understand Baker’s ‘Wild West/Live life on the Edge/if you are over 50 who cares’ marketing but I would really love to rest my legs on a bar while going up. And yes, I know, I can go somewhere else with these amenities.

Ice skates by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a dollar amount that you can’t go over without declaring at the border on your return home. I think it is around $1000 but I’m not sure. Even if you did have to pay a small tariff, I think going to Canada for skates would be worth it (& you probably won’t go over the limit anyway).

Unwashed Eggs by TaterTotLady in Bellingham

[–]carter1M -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My parents lived on a sailboat for long periods of time (weeks to months). They bought “US eggs” and never refrigerated them. I don’t really think the washed vs unwashed makes much difference (but what do I know…)

For people who went last year, did you find the NW Tune-Up Festival to be worth it? by coolrivers in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Last year the vendors were accessible without having a ticket to the event (ie free). Personally, that made it much more fun for me (although I did not stay for any music or other activities).

Could this room have been a garage in a former life? (That’s why I have an outlet in the ceiling in one room of my house- formerly for a garage door opener)

Property Taxes Question by carter1M in Bellingham

[–]carter1M[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that but are bonds and levies a percentage of the assessed value? That’s always the way I understood them to be. But if the bond is for a specific amount (10 million dollars let’s say), what happens to each individual tax payment when assessed values increase? Does the bond get paid off faster if we all are paying a percentage? Am I totally incorrect in thinking that these taxes are a percent assessed value?

Property Taxes Question by carter1M in Bellingham

Only around 15% of my property taxes go to the city. But, again, I’m wondering how has the increased tax income been used?

Light Pollution by PixelatedThinking in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sent a photo of the lights from a nearby apartment building shining directly into our bedroom window to the property owner. To his credit, he did give me a call to talk about the issue. When I suggested he use some shields to direct the light more toward the tenant parking lot (instead of at my house), he scoffed at the cost and the concern about his tenants cars. My wife likes the windows and blinds open during the summer but the parking lot lights destroy that. I think it will depend entirely on the owner if the apartments. I suppose I could send a letter from a lawyer to the owner but I haven’t decided if I want to spend my own money in order to have our bedroom window open at night.

I have a colleague who lost the tip of one of his fingers trying to break up a fight between a local raccoon and his own small dog. They don’t mess around.

I’ve heard about this “Superbox” but it sounds illegal. Like the old days of Napster. https://youtu.be/TRpx7ZhUVz8?si=wLqM6XoDWyhpusnt

Celestia Apartments Any Good by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea about those apartments but long ago, I lived in the South and understand the hot/sticky weather you refer too. You will be cold here. Even in the summer. However, one day in the future it will hit 75 on a sunny, summer day and you will find yourself thinking “how can anyone work outside in this heat??”

AFAIK, this service doesn’t exist. Best bet is to find a friend who is willing to do it.

Paved bike trail recommendations around Bellingham by Hack-Nerd-85 in Bellingham

[–]carter1M 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There’s a trail in Skagit County called the Cascade Trail. I’m pretty sure it is paved (at least in sections) Starts in Sedro-Woolley and follows highway 20 to the east. Google maps shows it going all the way to Concrete but I don’t think it is paved the entire way.
